The Flaming Butterfly
MY FIRST TUTORIAL!!!!! Hopefully some good pictures are to come for this later. For now, the written word will have to do. Referring to the above picture may help if you get confused.

This is an all time favorite piece. I just started playing with a modified right angle weave technique, and was making shapes when my mom said, "Hey! that' looks like a butterfly wing." And it did! So I made another one and put them together. This is a one of a kind, stunning piece that I'm very proud of.

Step 1
As I've said before, this is a modified right angle weave technique. If you have never done right angle weave, I would suggest looking at a tutorial for the basic stitch before you start on this necklace. Beware! This project is not for the faint of heart!

Wings

To begin, thread 12 size 11 seed beads and pass back through them to make a circle. Tie off your circle and then exit the eighth bead you added.
Step 2
Thread 10 more of the same size 11 seed beads and pass back through the 7th bead you added on your original circle to make a second circle. Repeat this step until you have a row of 9 circles.
Step 3
Exit the 10th bead added on your last circle and thread 10 beads. Pass back through the 9 bead added to create another circle.
Step 4
Exit the 10th bead you just added and thread two beads. Pass your needle through the two bottom beads of the circle that is in the row above the new circle you are making.
Step 5
Now add 8 beads and pass back through the 9th bead of the 1st circle in the second row. Exit the 8th bead in the 2nd circle of the 2nd row.
Step 6
Thread 8 beads and pass through the bottom two beads of the 3rd circle in the first row.
Step 7
Thread 2 beads and finish your 3rd circle on the 2nd row by passing back through the 7th bead added to your 2nd circle on the 2nd row.
Step 8
Repeat steps 5-8 until you have 8 circles in your second row.
You will continue to repeat this same pattern for the rest of the wing. Below is a chart that tells you how many circles should be in each row. Each O is a circle. Line up the circles just as you see below.

Step 9
Repeat steps 1-8 to make a second wing.
Step 10
Butterfly's body

String a size 8 crystal faceted bead and one seed bead. Pass back through the faceted bead and add another seed bead. Pass through the faceted bead a third time, and then through the first seed bead added. Thread 12 size 11 seed beads and pass through the first seed bead added. Thread 12 more and pass through the second seed bead added. Pass back through the faceted bead and exit the first seed bead added.
Step 11
Thread a size 6 faceted bead. Thread 1 seed bead. Pass back through the faceted bead and the adjacent seed bead. Thread 10 seed beads. Pass back through the first seed bead added. Thread 10 more and complete the circle. Pass back through the faceted seed bead and exit the 1st bead added.
Step 12
Thread a size 4 faceted crystal. Thread 1 seed bead and pass back through the faceted bead and the adjacent bead. Thread 8 seed beads. Pass through the first seed bead added. Thread 8 more and pass back through the adjacent bead. Your butterfly now has a body.
Step 13
Attaching the wings to the body.

Your wing piece should be turned on an angle with the smallest faceted bead at the top. Refer to the above picture to make sure you get it right.
Make sure your thread is exiting the seed beads surrounding the middle faceted bead. Pass through the 12 and 1 bead added on the 1st circle of the 1st row of your wings. Pass back through the beads on the body. Continue this path to reinforce it and repeat this step on the other side to attach the second wing.
Step 14
Antennas

Exit the top of the smallest faceted bead and pass through two beads to the right. Thread about 20 seed beads. Pass through two beads on the fourth circle of the 1st row of your ring and add 8 beads.

Make a circle by passing back through the 16th bead you added and then follow the path back to the butterfly's head. Repeat the thread path to strengthen it.

Repeat step 14 on the other side of the head.
Step 15
The Chain.

Surround a large 8 mm faceted bead using the same technique you used when making the body. Exit the 22 bead added.

Create three rows of right angle weave following this pattern:

Row 1 OOO
Row 2 OOO
row 3 O

Add a size 8 faceted bead to the end of Row 1.

Repeat 3 times.

Finally, create 1 row of five circles and add your clasp.
Step 16
Repeat 15 for the other side.
Step 17
Now you are finally read to attach the chain to the butterfly. This is quite simple. You will use the same technique you used to attach the wings to the body. Be sure to repeat your thread path several times to strengthen the connection.

You are ready to wear your beautiful necklace proudly! WHEW! That took a long time didn't it?!
