old table cloth to adorable old style skirt
i found an oval tablecloth at a flea market. very cheap. I already had some pleather, remnants I found at fabric store. bought a zipper. the linen is heavy, but even good for summer. it twirls, and I love the way it moves when I walk. it can be worn with the pleather over a shirt, or the shirt over the pleather (for a look of the skirt on the hips, and the pleather smooths out the stomach so no muffintops).
also since I made it I have lost weight, and taking it in at the waist and hips was no problem.

  • How to sew a maxi skirt. Table Cloth Skirt With Pleather - Step 1
    Step 1

I measured the circumference of my hips. and cut to that number (adding a little for seam allowance). then I measured from hips to waist ( so I knew how high to make it). I hemmed it over, even though it will not come unraveled. I wanted a smoother finish, and thicker. my hips were about 34in, and waist about 26in.

I probably should have waited on the zipper, but it would not have made a difference in fit, so I added it early. I used a 12-14in white, because I couldn't find a brownish one, plus the tablecloth is an off white.

    Step 3

I have a mannequin so this part was much easier. I had a rectangle of pleather, and I needed it to fit smoother. so I pinched it together on my dress form and marked it. i did not want to pin it, because that would create extra holes.

I sewed it. and voila!! waistband.
I considered adding a corseting detail, or steampunkish buckles ( to the sides or front), but so far I have left it plain.

  • Step 5

Sorry no picture. I forgot to take one of the tablecloth before and during its cutting.

I was large, and Oval (when I bought it I thought it was round, that added a small extra challenge).

I cut out my circumference of hips and then some, so that it could bunch up a bit at the top.

to attach it to the pleather, I DID NOT put the right sides together and sew. I simply fitted the inside of the pleather to the outside of the tablecloth. some of it bunches and some does not. I didn't mind.

  • Step 7

    no picture again.
since it was oval, the sides were very very long. I cut out triangles of fabric to shorten it a little, and to make it a bit more even. (there was so much extra fabric on the sides). and sewed it back together.

    Step 8

from the bottom of the triangles I cut out of the sides, I cut off the lace part. since the front of the skirt was just a hair short, I added it for a bit more length (and a cute layered look). I did this for the back also.

the sides were still a good bit too long. so I added pick-ups. I had no idea what i was doing. but in the end they help it flow, and move beautifully.

It was more sheer than i realized, and I had enough scraps left over. I pieced together a slip and attached it.

Hope ya'll enjoy. it is one of my favorites to wear.
