We used sandpaper on the logos, and any place we wanted weathering. If you use spray paint specific to plastic it's no necessary to sand them. I think we used a hammered paint to get that specific look.
We took them apart and sprayed each piece. A little time consuming, but well worth it. We also sanded down the logos, and a few of the edges to give them a worn look.
No offense taken. I think I had the same question when I first saw something labeled steampunk. It's sci-fi meets victorian meets industrial. But incase that's not enough, I think Wikipedia does a fine job explaining: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk
Thank you sooo much!! I can swing by Wal-Mart on my way home.
Are you having any issues with the paint flaking off, or is that paint you used specifically for plastic? I have a few plastic bits that I want to steampunk-ify, but I'm hesitant to start because I don't want to get the wrong materials.

Thanks for all the comments. I really loved this project. Bree - we actually just purchased hammered spray paint at Walmart (I think). It's something you could find at basically any store with a wide selection of spray paints. I think our colors were gun metal and copper. The detail work was done with regular modeling paint in silver (mostly dry brushed), black, and more copper. Hope that helps!
What kind of paint did you use?? I've been thinking about this and I work at a craft store, but I don't know what kind of paint to use! Help me, please?!
Incredible- I've already fallen in love with steampunk, and this project just confirms it. Going to have to try my hand at something along those lines at some point. Hmm, wonder if I could redo one of my old water pistols instead of a nerf gun... *starts scheaming* Awesome job!
