You Will Need
-
Step 1
Loosely CO the number of stitches you have decided on – remember the number of stitches has to be dividable by 5. The pattern is a repeat of 5 stitches. – the number of stitches you need depends on the size of feet you’re knitting for, the thickness of your yarn and how firmly you knit – I use 65 stitches for most sock yarns to make a medium sized ladies sock.
-
Step 2
Divide the stitches onto double pointed needles and join in the round. TIP: If you’re not comfortable with double pointed needles try using the “magic loop” – there are lots of tutorials on youtube.
-
Step 3
A: First 4 rounds: *3k, 2p*, repeat ** to end of round
B: Next 4 rounds: *2k, 2p, 1k*, repeat ** to end of round. TIP: If you’re not sure about the sizing,
It’s a good idea at this point to try the sock on your foot. If doesn’t fit snugly on your foot, start again with a different number of stitches.
C: Next 4 rounds: *1k, 2p, 2k*, repeat ** to end of round
D: Next 4 rounds: *2p, 3k*, repeat ** to end of round
E: Next 4 rounds: *1p, 3k, 1p*, repeat ** to end of round
Basically on every 5th round you shift your pattern one stitch to the right which create a rib that spirals left wise.Repeat A to E until you reach the toe. When your sock is long enough to knit the toe – make sure that the pattern repeat on your last round is *3k, 2p*
-
Step 4
Now knit the toe:
1. round: *k1 , k2tog, p2*, repeat ** to end of round
2. round: *k2, 2p*, repeat ** to end of round
3. round: *k2, p2tog*, repeat ** to end of round
4. round: *k2, 1p*, repeat ** to end of round
5. round: *k2tog, 1p*, repeat ** to end of round
6. round: *k1, p1*, repeat ** to end of round
7. round: *k2tog*, repeat ** to end of roundCut the yarn and use a tapestry needle or crochet hook to pull the thread through all the remaining stitches – secure the thread on the back side of the sock
-
Step 5
When making the second sock you can either use the same left wise spiralling rib or you can let the rib spiral right wise instead to create mirror image of your first sock.
To make a sock with a right wise spiral rib you shift the five stitch pattern repeat left instead of right:
A: *3k, 2p*
B: *1p, 3k, 1p*
C: *2p, 3k*
D: *1k, 2p, 2k*
E: *2k, 2p, 1k*Tip: To make more unique looking socks try adding some stripes or spots in a contrasting colour.
