These earrings are all the rage these days! The Indian style of jhumka earrings (also called umbrella earrings) is spreading around the world. When you make them out of paper you can make them in any colors you wish, and they are nice and lightweight!

Step 1
I use all 1/8" width paper for this project. You can use other widths, but your final project may look different. Start with your long strips of paper (I used black). I glued together 5 strips of 24" paper, giving me a long strip that was 120" long. Yours can be a little shorter or longer and it won't matter much, your finished piece will just be a little smaller or bigger. Use your slotted quilling tool or toothpick to roll both of the long strips into tight rolls. Make sure not to roll TOO tightly, or else it will be more difficult to shape nicely.

Step 3
Time to make the top pieces! Use the two remaining 6" strips of accent color and wrap them around the bottom of the aluminum slotted tool to make sturdy circles. You can use any small dowel for this. Use the two 3" strips to do the same, but pinch them into teardrop shapes. I used black color for this.

Step 4
Now you have all of your pieces ready! Time to make the umbrella shape. I use the paper quilling mini mold to shape my jhumka earrings. But you can just use your fingers or you can use any small ball/round object that is the right size. Just play around with them until both of your earrings are the same shape.

Step 8
After your earrings are dry, coat them in a sealant to keep them sturdy and water resistant. You can check out my blog for detailed posts about sealants. There are many products that work well including Diamond Glaze and Mod Podge. Paint on a couple layers, let it dry, and attach your jump rings and earring hooks. And then make another pair in different colors!
