The ultimate cake for lovers of popcorn, bacon, whiskey and maple syrup!
My Dad's Canadian so he loves bacon & maple syrup together but he also loves whiskey and I wanted to combine all three of his favourite things in to one cake. This cake turned out so well, after the fun of eating all the toppings, the maple cake (which I made using Martha Stewart's recipe here on CO+K - link below) was delicious and we were all super full after a slice.

  • How to bake a candy barrel cake. Maple & Whiskey Popcorn Barrel Cake - Step 1
    Step 1

I baked the cake and made the icing using Martha Stewart's Maple Cake recipe (http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/maple-cake) but substituted the vanilla in step 2 for 2 tablespoons of Jim Beam's Maple Whiskey. I also baked the cake in two small round cake pans, rather than one large square pan.

After the cake had cooled, I mixed up the icing according to the recipe above and spread half of it on one layer of the cake before placing the second cake on top. I then spread the remaining icing on top of the cake and left it to set.

I then placed the Kit Kat's around the outside of the cake and used a length of baker's twine to hold them in place. I then poured a small packet of M&M's inside - partly for flavour and partly to test the sturdiness of the cake.

I then popped a bag of bacon flavoured popcorn and poured it inside the barrel before serving to my Dad on his birthday with lit indoor sparklers for candles.
