How To Crochet An Oval Shape
A basic oval shape is made of two straight edges and two rounded ends (where all the increases happen, as in a traditional circle shape). This pattern is worked in the round and grows quickly. Usually used to crochet the bottoms of bags, but is nice for scarves and table centerpieces, too!

Step 1
Abbreviations :
chain = ch
slip stitch = sl st
treble = tr (is the american double crochet, DC)

Please note that I put my stitch markers into the first and last stitch of both straight edges!

START
Make a slip knot on your hook and chain 22.
Step 2
FIRST ROUND
wrap yarn around hook, insert hook in 3rd chain from hook and work your first treble (this stitch will be the last stitch of the 2nd rounded end). Work 17 more tr so to complete your first straight edge.
Step 3
In last chain work 3 tr : you have just created the first rounded end.
Step 4
Now you will start the second straight edge, working its trebles in the base chains of previous straight edge.
Step 5
As before, you need to work a total of 18 tr.
Step 6
In the bottom of first tr made at the beginning of the round, work 2 tr.
The second rounded end is completed.
Step 7
Make a sl st into the top of 1st tr made to close the round, then ch 2.
First round is done!
Step 8
SECOND ROUND
Work 2 tr in the same stitch (they are the last 2 stitches of the second rounded end).
Step 9
Even this time, work 18 tr to complete the 1st straight edge.
Step 10
Work (2 tr in the same stitch) 3 times, around the 1st rounded end.
Step 11
Along the 2nd straight edge, work 18 tr.
Step 12
Work (2 tr in the same stitch) twice, along the 2nd rounded end.
Step 13
Make a sl st into the top of 1st tr to close the round, ch 2.
The second round is done.
Step 14
THIRD ROUND
Work 1tr, then 2tr in the same stitch (end of 2nd rounded end).
Step 15
Cochet 18 tr along the 1st straight edge.
Step 16
Work (1 tr, 2 tr in next stitch) 3 times, along the 1st rounded end.
Step 17
Work 18 tr along the 2nd straight edge.
Step 18
Work (1 tr, 2 tr in next stitch) twice, along the 2nd rounded end.
Step 19
Make a sl st into the top of 1st tr to close the round, ch 2.
Third round is done.
Step 20
FOURTH ROUND
Work 2 tr, then 2 tr in same stitch (all these are the last 4 stitches of the 2nd rounded end).
Work 18 tr to complete the 1st straight edge.
Step 21
Work (2 tr, 2 tr in same stitch) 3 times, around the 1st rounded end.
Then crochet 18 tr along the 2nd straight edge.
Step 22
Work (2 tr, 2 tr in same stitch) twice around the 2nd rounded end.
Step 23
Sl st into the top of 1st tr to close the round, ch 2 if you want to crochet an extra round or simply fasten off just after working the sl st.

You can work more rounds, just remembering to increase stitches along both rounded ends. The shape of your oval (more or less stretched) is also influenced by the number of chains forming the starting foundation chain : remember that!
