A quick tutorial for a gorgeous art quilt.
The Hand of Fatima is a sign of protection in various religions. It is supposed to ward off the evil eye. This simple tutorial can be altered to make any simple applique quilt. You can totally wing it and use whatever thread colors and fabrics you have on hand. *Feel free to use this design for your etsy or other shop!

You Will Need

fabric, thread, quilt batting, button
  • Step 1

Make a paper template of the hand of fatima. You can make it of any image you want, the design is only limited by your imagination. Trace the design onto fabric and cut out.

  • Step 2

Create a fabric square to sew the applique onto. Mine was 10.5 inches square. Pin the applique shape in place and sew the shape onto the backing. Then pin the square onto a piece of batting that is a bit larger on all sides. Sew around the edges of the square with a zig zag stitch and then trim away the extra batting.

  • Step 3

Sew designs on the work with various thread colors, sew an eye symbol on the palm of the hand and add the button as the iris. Pin the work onto the backing fabric, wrong sides together and sew around the edges with a straight stitch. Then add a border or binding, and attach a ribbon for easy display.

  • Step 4

There you go! In just a couple hours you have created a gorgeous art quilt to give as a gift or to keep your decor fresh! Now display the quilt and ward off that evil eye!

Here's another way to put the backing on the quilt. First, add borders to the quilt top, and then use the pillow case technique to finish the quilt. Place the quilt face down on the backing fabric, right sides together. Then pin and stitch the layers together, leaving a 4 inch opening on one side. Turn the project right side out and sew a decorative stitch or zig zag stitch around the edges.
