  • How to make a dog outfit. Dog Elf Outfit - Step 1
    Step 1

Cutting out the hat and neck collar
For a medium to large dog, enlarge the pattern and print out the templates at 172%. Place the paper patterns onto the lime green felt as indicated. Pin in place, then cut carefully around the edges.

To make the long zig zag trim for edging the circular sections, use the pattern for the hat trim to cut the edging to the required length from hot pink coloured felt: thirteen points for the smaller circle and nineteen points for the larger circle.

    To make the hat:
Fit the Dremel Glue Gun 930 with a 7mm clear glue stick and set it to the high heat setting. Thread the 4mm ribbon through one of the bells and stick the ends of the ribbon together with a dab of glue. Use another dab of glue to stick the ends of the ribbon close to the point of the hat. This is so that the ends will be inside the finished hat and the ribbon and bell emerge from the top.

    Step 4

Ensuring that the glued ribbons are on the inside of the hat, fold the fabric round to make a cone shape and secure it close to the point of the hat with a dab of clear glue from your Dremel Glue Gun 930. Try to ensure that the ribbon emerges from the very tip of the cone shape. Apply a second dab of glue just inside the top of the hat where the edges overlap – see picture below – and do the same at the bottom edge of the hat. Then apply a thin line of glue all the way along the inside edge pressing the edges together, overlapping them evenly, to form the cone shape.

    Step 5

Pin the trim against the lower edge of the hat to ensure that it fits evenly all the way around. Remove the pins one by one and use your Dremel Glue Gun 930 and 7mm clear glue stick to glue the trim in place .

Take your elastic and make the chin strap. Press the lower edge of the cone flat with the join in the centre. Then mark each side point with a pin. At one of these points, use the Dremel Glue Gun 930 to apply a dab of clear glue. Press the end of the elastic firmly onto the glue to secure it. Then try the hat on the dog to find the correct length for the elastic, trim it to size allowing an extra 3cm for gluing and then stick the free end of the elastic in place, as before. The seam should be at the back of the hat.

    To make the neck piece:

Pin the thirteen point trim to the longest edge of the smaller circle to ensure an accurate fit. Unpin the trim one triangle at a time and using your Dremel Glue Gun 930 and 7mm clear glue stick apply a thin line of glue to the seam allowance on the trim. Glue the trim to the edge of the circle, pressing gently to avoid any glue squeezing out and spoiling the surface. Repeat the process to glue the nineteen point trim to the longest edge of the larger circle.

    Step 8

Lay the two collar bands on top of each other and, if desired, trim along all the edges using pinking shears to create a patterned edge. Take one of the bands and use tailors’ chalk to mark a line 0.5cm in from each of the long edges on one side only.

Place the band marked with tailors’ chalk on the work surface, chalked lines uppermost.

    Step 9

Pull the straight edges of the smaller circle apart so that the shape opens out and match the two pieces together, placing the curved edge of the neck piece against one of the lines chalked on the band. Ease the curved edge onto the band, pinning the two together as you work along and ensuring that the short ends align. The long edge of the thirteen point trim must be visible on the top of the smaller neck piece section as you work. Carefully unpin the end and using your Dremel Glue Gun 930, run a thin line of glue along the edge of the small circle then gently press it back into place against the chalk line.

    Step 10

Use the same technique to glue the larger neck piece section onto the opposite edge of the collar band, against the other chalk line, but this time ensuring that the long edge of the nineteen point trim is on the underside of the large neck piece section as you work along pinning and then gluing the pieces together.

Cut the 25mm ribbon in half. Apply glue using your Dremel Glue Gun 930 to one end of a length of ribbon and apply it to the collar band so that it overlaps by approximately 3cm, with the rest extending beyond the short edge of the band. Repeat the process at the opposite edge of the collar band: the projecting ends will be used to tie the neckpiece around the dogs neck.

    Step 11

Pin the remaining collar piece on top of the first one so that it will conceal the ends of the ribbon and neaten the band. Check the fit, then carefully unpin a small section at a time and using your Dremel Glue Gun 930 apply a thin line of glue close to the upper and lower edges of the band before gently pressing the surfaces together.

    Step 12

Push the free end of one of the ribbons into a bell and stick the bell onto the end of the ribbon with a dab of glue using your Dremel Glue Gun 930. Repeat on the other ribbon. Place the neckpiece around the dogs neck and tie the ribbon ends in a bow to secure it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These accessories fit a medium to large sized dog. The hat is 16cm tall and 30cm in circumference. The collar band of the neck piece measures 38cm. To adjust the pattern to suit a larger or smaller dog, enlarge all the pattern pieces until the collar band matches the neck measurement of your dog.
