Crochet Yourself Calm
A limited palette of calming green, blue and light and dark pink yarns creates a pool of tranquility in this cushion cover. By using the yarns in a different order for each of the sixteen squares, no two are the same – bringing a burst of colour to a cosy couch or a favourite armchair. The completed cushion is finished with a border of crab stitch.

TENSION
Rounds 1–2 measure 6cm
(2½in), so follow pattern, and at
end of Round 2, you should have a
measurement of 6cm (2½in).

FINISHED SIZE
About 42 x 42cm (16½ x 16½in)

    Circle in a Square
    A combination of double and double treble crochet stitches is used to create the radiating circles that form this square motif. The result is a substantial yet airy lace fabric, which suits both contrasting and complementary colour schemes.

    MATERIALS
    Cascade Ultra Pima Fine
    (100% pima cotton; 50g/1¾oz;
    125m/136½yds)
    Grapeade 3816 (yarn A)
    Ice 3736 (yarn B)
    Primrose 3712 (yarn C)
    Wood Violet 3709 (yarn D)
    Natural 3718 (yarn E)
    HOOK SIZE
    4mm crochet hook
    SKILL LEVEL
    Intermediate
    TENSION
    Rounds 1–2 measure 6cm
    (2½in), so follow pattern, and at
    end of Round 2, you should have a
    measurement of 6cm (2½in).
    FINISHED SIZE
    10.75cm (4¼in) square

    INSTRUCTIONS
    Using yarn A, ch4 and sl st to join into
    a ring.
    ROUND 1 Ch4 (counts as first tr, ch1),
    (1tr, ch1) 11 times into the ring. Join with
    a sl st to the 3rd ch of the beg ch4. Fasten
    off. (12tr, 12ch-1 sp)
    ROUND 2 Using yarn B, join in any ch-1
    sp from Round 1. Ch3 (counts as 1tr), 1tr,
    ch1 into same sp, * 2tr, ch1 into next ch-1
    sp; repeat from * around, join with a sl st
    to the top of the beg ch3. Fasten off. (24tr,
    12ch-1 sps)
    ROUND 3 Using yarn C, join in any ch-1
    sp from Round 2. Ch3 (counts as 1tr), 2tr,
    ch1 into same sp, * 3tr, ch1 into next ch-1
    sp; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st
    to the top of the beg ch3. Fasten off. (36tr,
    12ch-1 sps)
    ROUND 4 Using yarn D, join in any ch-1
    sp from Round 3. Ch4 (counts as 1 dtr),
    1dtr, ch3, 2dtr (corner made) into same
    sp, * [4tr in next ch-1 sp] twice **, (2dtr,
    ch3, 2dtr) in next ch-1 sp; repeat from
    * 2 more times, and from * to ** once.
    Join with a sl st to the top of the beg ch4.
    Fasten off.
    ROUND 5 Using yarn E, join to any st
    from Round 4. Ch1 (counts as first dc). Dc
    into each st around. Make (2dc, ch1, 2dc)
    in each corner ch3. Join with a sl st to the
    first dc.

    Circle in a Square
    Square Cushion

    INSTRUCTIONS
    Work 16 squares working Rounds 1–4 of
    the Circle in a Square motif (see page 50)
    and using different combinations of your
    chosen yarns.
    Use a tapestry needle and scraps of yarn,
    which match the squares to sew the squares
    together to make four rows of four squares.
    Sew together with right sides facing,
    stitching through the back loops.
    ROUND 1 With the right sides facing, and
    using yarn A, join in any corner space. Ch1
    * (2dc, ch2, 2dc) (corner made), dc in
    each st across, 2dc in each corner sp, and
    1dc in the space between squares; repeat
    from * until four corners and four sides
    have been made. Join with a sl st to the beg
    ch1. Fasten off.

    ROUND 2 Join yarn B (or the colour of
    your choice) in any st. Ch1, dc in each st
    around, and make 2dc in each corner ch-2
    sp. Join with a sl st in the first dc.
    Fasten off.
    ROUND 3 Join yarn C (or the colour of
    your choice) in any st. Ch1, dc in each st
    around the four sides of the square. Join
    with a sl st in the first dc.
    ROUND 4 Ch1, moving to the right, and
    make a crab st into each dc. End with a sl st
    into the first crab st made. Fasten off.
    Pin the cushion cover to top of the
    cushion. Sew together using matching
    thread.
