Add ear flaps and chin strap to a knitted hat
In the colder months trying to keep a hat on my little one was proving difficult. So my solution was to knit a triangular ear flap and chin strap to a previously knitted hat. First step put hat on child and measure with cloth measure tape under chin from ear to ear. This is the length of your chin strap. I had left over wool that matched the hat, but use whatever you have. Using a double pointed smaller needle I used a 3.25 pick up stitches from the side of the hat. I picked up 16, attach you wool and start knitting onto a larger knitting needle. Knit 2/3 rows before you start to decrease. Decrease evenly every other row until you get to four rows this is the beginning of the strap. Measure the triangle as you will have to create this in reverse for the other side. Keep in mind the the total length and knit the strap length accordingly and then start knitting your triangle this time in reverse Increasing every other row until you get to 16 stitches. I did a pick up and cast off technique to attach to the other side of the hat.
