  • How to bake a rainbow cake. 6 Layer Rainbow Cake - Step 1
    Step 1

Follow the instructions on the box to make the batter & divide into 6 separate bowls. Add a couple drops of food coloring to get : red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

    Step 2

Im not to sure how many drops i added but it was probably about 5 drops per color. Orange = yellow & red. Purple = red & blue.

  • Step 3

Leave out 1 box ( 8 oz. ) of cream cheese & 1/4 Cup of butter to soften at room temperature

  • Step 4

I only had two - 9 inch round pans, so i had to do this three times. Add batter to a greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. * Make sure the batter is distributed evenly in the pan & start with the bottom layers first (purple & blue should be cooked first)

    Step 5

Make cream cheese frosting while waiting for the cake to bake!
Cream the soften butter & cream cheese together. Add 1-1.5 Tbsp. of vanilla extract. Mix, then sift 1 cup of confectioners sugar into the bowl. Mix well
*you may want to double the recipe if you want to frost the entire cake

    Step 8

I added melted chocolate as a layer instead of cream cheese frosting in between the yellow & orange cake layer. It actually was supposed to be in between the green & yellow but i kinda forgot.

    Step 9

I frosted the top with rainbow chip frosting! I decided not to frost the sides because i liked seeing the layers plus i hate when a cake has lots of frosting

& now the fun part. Decorate as you want! i used the some leftover cream cheese frosting in a ziploc bag to write happy birthday.
    Enjoy <3

I've made one of these before but I mixed the batter colors all together so the whole cake would be tie dye. I covered it in chocolate frosting so when you cut into it there was a fun surprise!
