Pony Hair Shoes Help!

I have a pair of poney hair shoes that I love! They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own. The only problem is that the hair has started to seriously come off. One of the shoes is almost completely bald.

For those of you who are unaware of what pony hair is - its an animal hide, most likely cow or horse hide. The shoes were originally worth over $100 and I got them on a going out of buisness sale for $21. I really want to save these shoes but there isn't any way I can get the hair back now that its gone. I'm thinking that I need to shave the rest of the hair off but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
