Mome Raths for a garden!

I would like to make Mome Raths from Alice in wonderland to put in my garden. I have this tutorial but they would not be made to last in the outdoors. Any ideas for stuff to sub to make these mome raths to last outside??

To make one that could last outside:
Paint wooden dowls for the legs
you could still glue googly eyes on
For the hair/head you could use strips of thick canvise or strips of a blue tarp. Just sew it all together at the bottom then hot glue it to the dowls. The glue should last and if you use materials like that, it should last outside for a little bit

You could also use shredded carrier bags or bin-liners. Either like a ponytail, or make pom-poms from them.

I'm not convinced those are Mome Raths though, despite what Disney says. According to Humpty Dumpty's explanation of Jabberwocky, Raths are a type of green pig, and Mome means to be lost far from home.

Those long-legged beasties look more like Borogroves - a thin shabby looking bird with sticky-out feathers, somewhat like an upturned mop.
