Fudging Pop-Up Ads

Also, I just watched the ad and it tells me fudge all about the product.

Ineffective marketing!!

Oh... that will learn me to browse before making a thread about this lol. I just put one in the problems and suggestions board because there are loads of ads on this site now, and I too understand they need to generate money somehow but when you're not signed in it says 'to remove ads sign in'. You sign in and they're still there!! That one in the corner though will really irritate me though as you said it takes up the WHOLE screen you have to keep 'x'ing out of it.................. Tedious!!

oh this is why everything hasn't been working properly!
and stupid me thought they might have been improving the site for our benefit! But of course no! its to make themselves more money!
I'm so mad this site continues to dishearten me more and more lately! (why does everything got to be about money?) I thought it was bad enough when they started putting paid projects by companies on here!
and now every page i click on I have to wait for some stupid add that takes up the whole page!
this is great it means when I am on low speed internet (which is almost all the time) I won't even be able to view the chat boards anymore, as adds make the loading freeze (they are also costing everyone more as it extra mbs the page is now bigger to load!
I don't even wear make-up! it is superficial and fake! so I certainly will not be buying any of this crap CO+K have sold out to advertise.

Totally agree, there are enough ads on here as it is. Living in the middle of nowhere I only have slow broadband too and can't be arsed to wait for a gigantic ad to clear the screen on EVERY page.

So my computer was being a little slow and as I was trying to browse the boards, I kept getting a strange mouse-over icon when I wanted to click on something. Then I realized my cursor was being weird. I shrugged, used my middle mouse button to open some stuff in separate tags and.. ended up with about 5x the website from the add. Apparently the link had loaded but the full-screen picture hadn't. This bothers me. I love how adds disappear when you log in, but.. why keep the most annoying one there?

I too hate adds like that.
If this site is too slow for you, turning off javascript might help. It prevents you from browsing through multiple project-pictures, but most of the other things still work like comments, board posts etc. It might also kill those adds. (haven't tried that yet)

EDIT: just turned of my javascript* and it works. The annoying add is gone.
* In Internet Explorer you have to go to the extra/options menu if I'm correct. In FireFox I'm using the developer toolbar (google it for download) and it has a neat 'disable' button. Or go to 'options' and then the 'content' tab where you'll find an 'enable javascript' checkbox.
Remember to turn javascript back on again if you leave because lots of sites use it (some even for their main menu...) and will not work properly.

By the way: I do know that CO+K needs the adds to survive, but those in-your-face or adds with sound are really just buggering and not helping for funding.

agree with Zina and Laurel, i look at the site in the morning at work so I'm limited on time, it's rather annoying that i have to keep clearing out the ads I wear eye liner and that's in I really dont need to be ordering toxic make-up from China thank you very much!

These ads started appearing on the site today and I'm sorry to hear how much you all dislike them. I'll have a chat to Tom about this tonight when he gets home from work.

In November, Tom's going to work for the site fulltime (up until now it's been an evening and weekend job for him) which means he'll be able to fix all the bugs and make lots of awesome new features. Advertising is the only way we make money from the site, so we really rely on campaign like this (as annoying as they can be). Maybe there's something we can do that will keep everyone happy.

Couldn't they just have a static clickable banner? I think it's the "in-your-face-ness" that's so annoying.

Laurel is right, we've all said how we appreciate that it's the only main source of funding this site has and without it we wouldn't have CO+K but the "in-your-face" ones are sooo annoying. I don't mind the other ads on here becuase they are on the sidelines and static and don't try and give you a heart attack with big screens and sounds just so you can buy their products.

I've just noticed that the sides of this page are blank, maybe if you wanted to encourage more advertisements do what like FB has and have small ad notices on the sides of the pages?? Just a thought.

I see only the ones on the bottom and side of the page (which where over there since I joined and they don't bug me) and I see a small window next to Crafterellas head,but I don't have any "in your face" pop-up adds.Strange...

I never even notice adds on here since all the awesomeness draws my attention!

Ahhh this is why I LOVE my ad block for Firefox. *pets it* I haven't seen a single ad. But I do notice the pages load slow anyways, wonder if this is due to ads.

We're working with the people running them to sort this out - they were showing on too many pages, way to much.

The ads do support the site, so it's really important we get them right - and that means getting feedback from everybody!

I'm looking into removing these for logged in users too - or reducing the volume of them. The guys we're working with for adverts do have some fantastic clients which *should* be of interest though. Maybe hair products aren't the most interesting though...

I'm passing on all your feedback to them too - nobody wants adverts nobody likes!
