Unconventional Pets
As you can see from the title this threa will be discussing "unconventional" pets. If you could have a pet that is not typical of the common household what would it be?
I would LOVE to have a pet hedgehog.
What about the rest of you? I'd love to hear your thoughts...
I had three toed box turtles, I loved them. My ex has them now
I want to buy my husband a rat for his birthday!Where planning to get one for a year now,so Ill surprise him.
I had two white mice and a turtle.I found him on the railroad near our house. He wondered away from a dirty leak near by,so i brought him home.I had him for the summer and then I let him free in a clean lake which has lots of turtles in it.
Oh,and I would love to have a weasel!
Becstar we had a hedgehog family last year in our backyard. We put milk every night on the doorstep and after a week they where sitting on the doorstep every night making funny noises, begging for there milk. They where so cute, but they moved away in the fall.
I used to have a pet rat...they make really great pets.
I also had pet mice....I got one, then it had 8 babies!
When I was about 5 years old, I saw a program about Madagascar wildlife featuring bushbabies, and pestered my parents for a pet bushbaby for years! Of course, I never got one....
Who could resist those big eyes?
I've had a red-eared terrapin (red eared slider) for 20 years now and she is lovely. She lives in a huge tank that takes up most of our living room!
I would absolutely LOVE to have a pet tiger! They are such stunning creatures, and the cubs simply are adorable. >^;^<
Violetta - AAAAWWWW at your family of hedgehogs... I would have to have taken them into my home. How lovely!!
Oooh at the mention of a weasel, I wouldn't mind a ferret for a pet, they are cute xx <3
Loving the suggestions.
I wouldn't mind a tiger for a pet, except for their size when they grow ='( if only you could get minature tigers for pets
its not good to have tigers for pets or any wild cats, they need loads of space. Maybe if you had an large ranch and they can roam
No, that is true. Hey that's not a bad idea Michelle. I wouldn't mind having some sort of wildlife sanctuary for larger animals...
Speaking of hedgehogs... I had my own hedgie once and they make excellent pets if you understand their needs. He was quite friendly towards people, and their quills dont prick you at all. You could actually pet them ( just not going the wrong way :p)
they look super sweet
Aaawwww... I'm envious and you hedgie looks uber cute!! Where did you get it from? Did you just pluck him out of your garden or get him from a shop? What are their needs...? Sorry for the ignorance but I'd love to know everything there is to know in keeping a hedgehog as a pet...
Ever since I saw the movie Beastmaster, I have wanted a ferret as a pet, they are so cute and from what I have read about them, they can be quite the little thieves.
I used to keep tarantulas, I had a Chilean Rose and a Mexican Red-Leg, they didn't do much but were great for keeping my ma out of my house;)
On a side note I was named after a ferret=) Also ferrets can be smelly, they secrete a lot of musky stuff, super-cute tho=)
I'd like to have a batbox, not for pets, that would be mean, but so as I could watch them fly out at night. I'd like a tame magpie as a pet if I could=)
I wish I lived in Europe, because hedgies are wild there! I had an African hedgehog, named Ambrosia, for a few years. She was around a year old when I got her, bought her from my hairdresser(she was pregnant, and also had chinchillas, pit bulls, and a teensy teacup chihuahua), for $75. She ate cat food, because it has lots of protein(they are insectivores), and 'hedgehog food' is way too expensive and not usually well made. The woman I'd bought her from had kept her in a clear plastic tote-storage box, with no lid. She'd figured out how to climb her water bottle and get out at night, so we bought her a second hand ferret/rat cage, with 3 levels and 2 ramps, plus a plastic wheel she LOVED to run in. I learned that they sometimes like certain human foods (boiled eggs, apples, chicken, halved grapes), so I started putting a little of each on the rim of her food bowl, every few weeks. I figured out she loved everything except apples(she'd toss the slices into her wood shavings). She was very cuddly, she'd climb my shoulder and nuzzle my neck, and if she got scared, she'd climb in my hair!
I've also always wanted a ferret, but I couldn't have one when we had Ambrosia, because ferrets are the only other pets that can really damage or kill a hedgie. My cats(a little short haired mix and a huge Maine Coon) thought she was really cool. At first, they'd sit on the ledge next to her cage and when she moved around they'd slap the cage. After a stern talking to or two, they figured out she was family, so they'd just watch her, fascinated. I even let her roam around on my bed with them, and they never attempted to hurt her. I think they just thought she was so odd, they didn't know what to do with her. They loved to hang out in the bathroom when I gave her her weekly bath in the sink. Man, I'm getting sad, I miss all my fuzzy babies....my Maine Coon(Bubba) accidentally hanged himself, and after my (now ex)husband and I split, he 'accidentally' let Autumn out of the apartment and never saw her again.
