My aunt showed my this cool website..

http://www.freecycle.org/

its a place where you can get free things and give things all in an effort to recycle and have less useful things enter our landfills! there are groups everywhere all over the world! maybe just check it out and see if there's anything in your area giving away something you might need.. or maybe someone in your area needs something that you just dont have the use for anymore..

Word of warning though! I really was into this site a year ago when I lived in upstate New York, and I did lots of trading and giving/reciving with no problem really... but I let a lady I had talked to a lot borrow some wedding accessories, like a veil, shoes, peticoat, jewelry (not terribly expensive) Because she was having an quick wedding. I took them to her house, helped her pick out what would match, and we had a plan to meet the following weekend to return the items....I never heard from her again! She wouldnt repond to my calls, emails, and when I went to that address again the people said she didnt live there anymore.

Happy how terrible is that! To run off with someones wedding items! I know they're just things/material items, but it really ticks m off that someone would have the balls to do that!

After a while I decided I should let one jerk ruin my helpful spirit! I saw that another military wife (like myself) needed a dress for an upcoming Ball. I wear plus size dresses, so I know how hard it is for me to find one that fits and doesnt look matronly (sp?) So once again I put my faith in someone and let her borrow a dress, shoes and matching purse...only to be let down once again....she ran off into the sunset with my beautiful outfit Happy

Both ladies I had numbers and addresses for! And really seemed like normal, quality individuals. Both let me down and really broke my heart.

Moral of the story, use the site and all its good qualities....dont ever, ever let someone "borrow" anything!

I'm in the like camp as well! Very helpful when moving or spring cleaning! I do get annoyed by the people posting Wants of new game systems, new computers, cars, etc. but those just go to the recycle bin. I got all my canning materials off freecycle, and when the woman found out I was planning to make jam gave me a rhubarb plant as well. Happy
Sorry your experiences were lame Pammerz! Sometimes people stink.

Used this loads in the UK.
Freecycled our son's garden play house and reused the space. Relocated an octagonal summerhouse to create a very grown-up freecycled drinking shed
Used Craig's list once in Seattle-not a great experience as we did not the area well ;0)
FYI there is currently a court case in Seattle convicting a group for "Craig List Murder".
Family listed a ring group turn up tried to steal the ring and shot and killed the Dad.

Love the concept of freecycle/craigslist but use it with a deal of sense/safely.

Absolutely love freecycle! Today a lovely lady in my area gave me two years worth of cross stitch magazines - with the free kits still included!! Also, another lady gave me a bag of arty-craft magazines and a tailors dummy! Also received a huge pile of various card craft magazines! Hemel Hempstead Freecycle rocks! Thanks for reading my gush!

I use freecycle for various things, have no real cool stories to share but I've been a member in my area for almost two years Happy

I signed up in my yahoo mail, and I instantly got like 5,000 emails a day. It was insane. I never figured out how to sort it all out and abandoned my email. I had to disconnect it all because it was so overwhelming! Oh well Happy

Freecycle isn't very active in my area. I live about 1 hour 15 min, from the nearest set up. We use the community board at the grocery store, but there is very rarely anything up for free. I also trash pick whenever I see some thing interesting : )

If you have craigslist or kijiji in your area, they both have a "free" section where you can get and give away items for free.
my only word of advice is to make sure your not home alone when someone comes to pick something up, you just never know what kinds of creeps are out there and what there intentions are.

Have to say my experiences have just been positive too (apart from a couple of flakers)
I use it to get rid of loads of stuff as I don't drive so I can't take it to the dump (mind you that's another good place to pick up items - my dining chairs came from there for £5!)
Have so far been really good and only got rid of stuff not taking more in!

I LOVE craigslist and freecycle seems to be okay.
I have had flakers on freecycle they said they would pickup something, and never showed so I just goodwilled the items.
Also, these were FREE on craigslist, I just picked them up tonight. I got them as an ironic gift for my funky brother, but my husband decided he likes them, the steer is my fav. Happy Has anyone else found a free gem on either of the mentioned sites?
