DIY The Look

I am a Wednesday's child. Full of woe. (You know the rhyme, right?) So it makes sense for me to dress up this halloween as Wednesday Addams, one of my key reference points waaaay back when I was forming my personality. (My other personal inspiration is Daria (yes, my personal development was heavily based on a cartoon... And what?!), but I went as her last year so I decided to shake it up a little this year. Well, swap one sarcastic, caustic, enormously witty character for another sarcastic, caustic, enormously witty character. And it's so easy! I chose ten simple tutorials to make the outfit and accessories - all chosen to turn my trusty LBD into a costume fit for a fabulously deadpan goth girl! I wanted to give it a bit of a grown-up twist, so I went with the smoky eye and fishtail braids, but I also wanted to keep the look playful, which is where the eyeball ribbon bows come in (these bows would also look pretty cool pinned to a pair of mary janes, but I chose the shoe wings tutorial - which can be used to make shapes of your choice for your shoes; not just wings. I'm thinking axes or daggers.) Adding a white peter pan collar completes the foundations of your outfit, and now all that's left is to accessorise! I've chosen a poison pendant, rosary beads, a doll head, some painted tights (mine are crosses, not polka dots, just for that extra gothic flair), and a book clutch (you could fashion a spellbook, or maybe a prayer book if you want to be a bit controversial! And you could easily add a strap to make this bag more manageable). And there you have it! Wednesday!

Markee recreates the costume of Kim Novak in Hitchcock's Vertigo for today's Halloween #DIYTheLook.

Kim Novak was one of Hitchcock's stunning blonde leading ladies, and her wardrobe for her undercover character was full of class. Every detail of her outfit is thought out, from the colour palette, cut and accessories. It's magical to watch her transformation from being an average girl to an upper-class lady as she embodies her double agent role. Hitchcock always makes murder look glamorous!

Helena creates a bohemian style, perfect for Southern California in today's #DIYTheLook

The heat has not relented here in Southern California and I'm hot and sticky. I picked out a bohemian inspired look with a flowing kimono top (I would make it out of chiffon or silk) and delicate lace trimmed shorts. There is no way I am ready for boots yet, so I would slip on these cool rope sandals. I also would like to keep the hair off my neck with a chain headband, and with my hair pulled back like that you'll be able to see my ingenious feather earrings made from an aluminum can! The most beautiful thing about summer is a having a golden tan, but not a real one! My perfect self-tan would be complimented by shimmery eye makeup and a cute nail design. Grab a slouchy bag and I'm out the door in a totally handmade look.

Megan from Altogether Beautiful recreates the style of Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect 2 for #DIYTheLook

My DIY The Look was inspired by Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect 2 in her plaid skirt outfit. Anna (Beca in the movie) has an edgy style that's not too hard core. She mixes classics prints with basic colors and picks accessories that have gold accents. Every makeup look includes a classic smoky eye. Add loose curls and you have a sexy, edgy look.

Markee recreates the vintage look of Joan from Mad Men for today's Halloween DIY The Look.

I love Joan's style because she is sexy and confident in a fully retro wardrobe. She always looks smart, and knows exactly how to dress for her figure and complexion. I love that every aspect of her style is well thought out, from head to toe, she is a inspiration for any modern office gal who wants to exude that 60s secretary vibe.

TheSewingMaven recreates the 80's look of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan.

Madonna has been a style icon since the 80’s. I love how she stays current and creates memorable trends that are femme noir.

Juu & Ros from Operation Overhaul recreate the casual chic style of Olivia Palermo for today's #DIYTheLook

I love her casual day looks. They are easy to put together, but always have an extra edge to them, like how she pairs a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans with feminine strappy heels to play it up. Her everyday look is always clean and minimal, it's great for those lazy days!

Helen creates a bat inspired costume for today's Halloween DIY The Look.

I love bats, I love the way they flit across the sky in a seemingly random manner and at such a speed that you can never get a good look at them. They're mysterious, cute and a tiny bit scary...I'd like to pay homage to these nocturnal acrobats by creating a really cool bat costume. You could dress all in black and hang upside down but that could be a little difficult and give you a headache. Alternatively you could piece together a much more imaginative costume; you'd need a cool pair of wings and some neat ears of course and then you'd have to decide whether to go for a mask or some smoky eye make up...

Cheryl recreates the costume of Hermione Granger from Harry Potter for today's Halloween look.

Hermione Granger has always been one of my favorite characters - she has ideal characteristics such as intelligence, courage, and wit. While being all of these, she still manages to be put together effortlessly. She isn't concerned with looks, but she always looks good. Her natural face, bold eyebrows, and that wavy hair help to make the grey pleated skirt and Gryffindor cloak she is used to wearing into more of a statement. Though her outfit is simple, she is so much more.

Erin recreates the look of 1940's style icon and actress Anna Karina for #DIYTheLook

Anna Karina's style in the 1960's is iconic- effortless and feminine. I always envy her hairstyles and adorable outfits when I watch one of her films!
