My mom has always crocheted but when she wanted to teach me, I was too cool to do it (I was 15). When I got older, she didn't want to teach me, so I taught myself. I got the Complete Idiot's Guide to knitting and crocheting. It's really shown me a lot. You could probably check out youtube, I'm sure there are plenty of how-to's. Good luck to you!
