Tell us a bit about your home and what you love about it the most?
We live in a 1918 craftsman style bungalow. We chose to purchase an older home against the advice of family (due to the amount of upkeep required), but could not imagine ourselves in anything newer than what we have now. Over the last 3 years since buying, we have been slowly been renovating each room on our own. I love that we are able to work with each room to make it into our vision. Our home is cozy and unique. It provides a nice setting for our eclectic vintage decor and enough space for both my husband and I to have studio space.
What was the first DIY project you did to your home or first thing you made for it?
The very first thing we did when we moved into our home was to sand and refinish all of the hardwood floors. Soon after we painted every room and all of the cabinets throughout the entire house. We spent an entire week powering through before moving our things in. We slept on a mattress on the ground in whatever room we weren't working on at the time. Oh the good old days! But we were able to make this house ours. And have continued big projects since such as our kitchen and bathroom renovations! Next up- an addition for extra studio space!
Do you have any tips for staying tidy & organised?
In attempts to keep our home in order, I try my very best to keep things in their designated "homes"- baskets, shelves, wherever this may be. Just ask my husband how many time I bring something to him and naggingly ask him "does this have a home?". My brain gets a bit scattered when things are everywhere so I love order. My husband however is the exact opposite and can create and thrive in total chaos. In a lot of areas of our home we have hidden storage in free standing cabinets which I find super helpful. We also have a ton of builtins as we live in a craftsman bungalow, so I try to use up every inch of space with baskets for more storage.
Another tip is to purge. If you are like me and enjoy buying stuff all too often, take some time our every couple months and get rid of the things that you don't use any more. If you are buying something newer and nicer (such as a pair of scissors for example), just get rid of the old ones at that time. I keep a box in the closet of my mudroom of "giveaways" that is specifically for things like this. Once it is full I take it to goodwill (or for craft supplies to our local craft store where they run a craft closet filled with second hand supplies- one person's trash is another person's treasure!).
If you could tour any celebrities home, who would it be?
I recently had an awesome opportunity to check out fabric and pattern designer Amy Butler's home in person and that was pretty sweet. But if I could see inside anyone else's abode it would hands down be Emily Henderson.
If you had three wishes, what changes would you make to your home?
I love our home, but we live in a very old neighborhood. I would love to have a little more room between our home and our neighbors houses (my neighbors can see from their kitchen through our first floor master bedroom and into our master bathroom if the blinds are open!). I think this would also allow for our house to have more direct light as well.
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
I like doing all types of crafting, especially projects to repurpose old cast off items. Aside from making crafts, I enjoy working with my husband on home improvement projects/ renovations and his side furniture business Midwest Woods Furniture. When we are not working at our day (or night) jobs, we like to go flea markets and antique malls or work on home improvement projects.
