Have you always been creative and what’s the earliest work you can remember creating?
I've always wanted to be creative but could never truly express myself until I began teaching myself calligraphy and watercolor around two years ago. I was bored one summer and started seeing calligraphy on Pinterest, so I tried faux calligraphy and began working my way up! The first few faux calligraphy projects I did were pretty bad--they were just watercolor backgrounds with faux calligraphy quotes on them using sharpie...you have to start somewhere!
What's your studio like and how do you keep organised?
Because I'm a college student living in a small apartment and occasionally visiting home, I have a bit of a compact and traveling "studio." I think this is great because it also gives me the freedom to bring all my stuff with me if I feel like working at my desk, at the dining table, on the floor, or even outside or on vacation! It allows me to be a bit more spur of the moment. I'll email you photos for how I keep stuff organized, I mostly use cute little jars I find in thrift stores or at Home Goods! I also like to keep fresh flowers, especially peonies, around.
Where do you look for inspiration?
The obvious answer would be Pinterest! I also love just going to antique/thrift stores and places like Home Goods looking for odd things I can letter on (I do a blog piece every Wednesday called 'Unusual Wednesday).
Whats in your pencil case / camera bag?
Currently I have a notebook, a couple of pencils, some black india ink, some brushes, watercolors, white craft paint, and my pen holders and nibs!
Any tips for someone suffering from creative block?
I like to go outside to help myself think outside of the box! I also of course would suggest Pinterest, especially for good quotations and wording of certain things like invitations, etc.
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
I love to craft! I currently love painting things with chalkboard paint (it's so easy!) and I love creating these cool pixelized watercolor paintings that I've been planning on creating a tutorial for. I also love playing tennis and baking.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I'm so glad to have been asked to do this and I hope people will enjoy these tutorials! You can also follow me on Instagram @elynlettering for more videos and pictures of me creating calligraphy and lettering!
