Reversible tulip cushion
I love tulips and I liked the idea of making something with a tulip design where the shape is made of three overlapping teardrop shapes - this works particularly well when they are translucent. When I won these gorgeous japanese fabrics from Saints and Pinners blog I decided to make this cushion as they sort of reminded me of origami papers you might make lilies (or tulips) from and the colours complemented each other so well.

  • How to make a shaped cushion. Tulip Cushion - Step 1
    Step 1

Draw and cut out 6 identical tear drop shapes from tracing paper. I found the method in the image helpful.

3 of these tear drops overlaid make up the front of the tulip and three more make the back.

    Step 3

Cut out your fabric about 2cm larger than the tear drop and pin to the tracing paper. Repeat for all 6 tear drops

    Step 4

Pin three of the teardrops together and applique the joins together on the right side.

Repeat for the other three teardrops. Overlapping the teardrops differently will make each side look different.

Remove any pins that will be concealed when the two tulip pieces are pinned back to back. Rip out as much of the tracing paper as possible without damaging the fabric.

    Step 5

Pin the two tulip pieces back to back (using existing pins where possible)

Sew around the edges leaving a gap for stuffing down one of the straight sides. Turn inside out and stuff with toy stuffing and sew up the gap.
