Thrifty way to create a real green space :)
One of my new favorite things to do is take clippings of my healthy house plants and transplant them. A very simple and thrifty way to fill my apartment with more plants! :)
I have a few books on plants, but my knowledge is pretty limited. So if I can do this and have the plants live on and thrive ANYONE can :D
You can use a new container to plant your clipping in or simply add it to an existing plant pot for variety. (both have worked for me)

  • How to plant a plant / a flower / a tree. Transplanting A Plant Clipping - Step 1
    Step 1

    Gather supplies:

    - potting soil
    - jar/can/pot
    - plant clipping

    *optional*
    - small stones

*if your container has a small hole in the bottom of it you can skip the stones*

    Step 2

Fill your container of choice with potting soil.

*if you have some small stones, add them first to the bottom of the container - this will provide a reservoir for water to pool and prevent the soil from becoming over saturated*

    Step 3

Dig a small hole in the center (about 1/2 the depth of the container).

    Step 4

Place the 'open' end of the clipping (where it was detached from the original plat) into the hole.

    Step 5

Fill in the hole with soil. As you do this GENTLY press down the soil around the plant clipping - add more soil as required.

Water enough to dampen soil (if the water pools and does not absorb then there is too much).

    Step 6

Find a sunny place for your new plant to grow :)

    Check back daily.
Maybe rotate the plant periodically so that it gets even sun.
Keep away from cold drafty windows.

Common reason house plants usually die - over watering. Just make sure the soil stays moist.

    HAVE FUN! :D

Soaking the cut end in water for a week or two will also cause roots to sprout, this is also a good way to get your cutting to take hold and might work better on those stubborn plants (like my Devil's Ivy)
