When a friend saw the adult version of this hat, he asked if I can make one to fit his daughter. So, I did.

You Will Need

Worsted Weight Yarn
I used TLC Ultra Soft 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn in "Butterscotch", 5oz per skein. This yarn has been discontinued, but any worsted weight yarn will work.
US 8, 16" Circular Needles US 8 Double Pointed Needles Tapestry Needle Stitch Markers Button , 1.5" in diameter
Final Circumference: 18 inches
  • Step 1

    Instructions:

(Note: You will start by knitting a flat garter stitch rectangle that will be joined for knitting in the round.)

    Cast on 93 stitches.

Work in garter stitch for 2 inches, ending with a wrong side row.

(RS): Bind off 13 sts (80 sts remain). Knit to end of row. DO NOT TURN. You will now join for knitting in the round.

Place marker to mark the beginning of the round and join by knitting the first stitch after the bound off section.

Continue knitting each round until the hat measures 5 inches from cast on edge.

Crown Shaping (Transfer stitches to DPNs when the circumference is too small to knit with the circular needles.).

    (K8, K2TOG) to end.
    (K7, K2TOG) to end.
    (K6, K2TOG) to end.
    (K5, K2TOG) to end.
    (K4, K2TOG) to end.
    (K3, K2TOG) to end.
    (K2, K2TOG) to end.
    (K1, K2TOG) to end.
    (K2TOG) to end.

  • Step 2

    Finishing:

Cut yarn end and weave through the remaining 8 stitches twice with tapestry needle.

Secure the “garter flap” (created from the 13 st bind off) to the hat by sewing the button to the flap through both layers.
    Weave in ends.
