The box was from a cheap shop in the town nearest me, I guess the equivalent in the States would be Wal-mart? That said, any cheap pine box would do, I think I paid £1.99 (maybe $3 or so?) for mine. I've seen some old jewellery boxes and similar in thrift stores that would work brilliantly.

THATS SO COOL! I'm going to have to try this for an up-and-comming friends birthday... I'll probably age the box though, put some coral or something around it to make it look like its been down at sea for quite a while.
It does still open, but doesn't close all the way because of the height of the tentacles. It's not a massive issue, and the boxes are certainly still usable as storage. Getting varnish in the hinges is a bad idea, it tend to make them stick. I know because I've done it every single time I've made one, and I've done three now.
