Step 1
BASIC PATTERN
(For swatch, ch 32.)
ROW 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sk 4 ch, Shell in next ch, sk 4 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * across.
(Swatch has 3 patt reps, 1 sc.)
ROW 2: Ch 4 (counts as tr throughout), tr in first sc, *ch 3, sk 4 tr, sc in next tr, ch 3, sk 4 tr**, V-st in next sc, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, 2 tr in last sc, turn.
ROW 3: Ch 1, sc in first tr, *Shell in next sc**, sc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, sc in tch, turn.
Rep rows 2 and 3 for patt.
(Swatch has 9 rows in patt.)
Step 2
Edge Shaping
Edge shaping is not practical, because the large size of the Shell would produce a very acute angle, and because no half Shells are used at the edges.
Step 3
Internal Shaping
1 Shell is added every other row.
(For swatch, ch 22. Work row 1 of patt. 2 patt reps, 1 sc.)
Place marker in center sc.
IncRow 1: Work in row 2 of patt to marked sc, (tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr) in marked sc, move marker to last tr made, ch 3, continue in patt across.
IncRow 2: Work in row 3 of patt to marked tr, sc in marked tr, Shell in next tr, move marker to center tr of Shell just made, sc in next tr, continue in patt across.
IncRow 3: Work in row 2 of patt to marked tr, (sc, ch 2, V-st, ch 2, sc) in marked tr, move marker to last sc made, ch 3, continue in patt across.
