I grew up making these without peanut butter and lost the recipe. Thanks for sharing this . . . brings me back to my younger years and now enjoy making these with my all-grown-up daughter.
Question though... what do you mean by "pure white oats" and not to use them? Aren't all oats white? I've always used Quaker Quick Cooking Oats, but you aren't specific as to what type to use.
I found out a few years ago that I'm allergic to peanuts, but when I was a child, these cookies were one of my favorites, except that my mom used peanut butter. I tried making these according to this recipe, and they were very gooey, and wouldn't "harden" as they're supposed to. The following morning, I had a plate full of chocolate oatmeal goo. I put it back in the pot and added Wow Butter to the mixture, and they're just like the ones my mom used to make.
Hi Evelyn K. Thanks for this version of the recipe. My son and I added a tablespoon of vanilla extract as well and you could really taste it since there was no peanut butter. He'll be able to take these to school and share them tomorrow because they're safe for the peanut allergy kids.
Thanks Evelyn K. for sharing. And your right about not finding a recipe with out peanut butter. And that is why I was looking for this recipe for those who have peanut allergies.
