Keep your knitting out of harm's way...
Knitting needles are evil.
2 days ago I had bizarre freak accident that resulted in my big toe being impaled on a sock knitting needle (I always thought they would be too blunt to go all the way through, but what did I know..)

I decided to make this bag to avoid future embarrassing trips to A&E (they thought it was hilarious) and to amuse myself while my toe heals. I'm kind of a sewing novice, so this took me a while, but it's actually fairly easy to make.

Hope the instructions are clear enough. I couldn't take photos while I was making it, but I hope you can get the gist from these.

  • How to make a shoulder bag. Lethal Knitting Bag - Step 1
    Step 1

Cut out a piece of fabric that is the width (allowing for the seams) and TWICE the length that you want your bag to be. Fold it in half. The fold will be the bottom of the bag, and the two seams will be at the sides. Make sure you have an inch or two at the top of the bag, to fold over as channels for the drawstring.

    Step 2

If (like me) you're using double sided fabric, decide which side you want the bag to be and which side you want to use for the applique. For example, I made my bag out of the red side, and used the floral side for the applique and the drawstring channel. Make sure you have a spare bit of your fabric for this.

If you aren't using double sided fabric, choose another fabric for the applique.

    Step 3

Draw your applique design on the paper side of the bondaweb and cut it out. Iron it on to the WRONG SIDE of the applique fabric, with the paper side of the bondaweb facing up. Without peeling off the paper, cut out the design, and once you've decided were to place it on your bag, iron it on (with the sticky bondaweb side facing down).

    Step 4

Sew around the applique. I did it by hand but you could use a sewing machine.

    Step 5

Fold the fabric so that it's inside out, and sew up the two sides, making sure to leave an inch or 2 at the top for the channel.

    Step 6

If you're using double sided fabric, turn the bag inside out again to the right side. Turn the bits you left at the top, down, so that the other side of the fabric is showing, and sew along this flap. Don't sew up the sides of these or you wont have holes for the drawstring. Do the same for the other side.

If you didn't use double sided fabric, you can choose whether you want to turn the flaps out or in.

    Step 7

Choose a ribbon or tie, and thread it through the holes that you left, through the channels with a safety pin. Voila!
