Ack, sorry for the late reply! I used felt; I recommend using a fabric that won't fray. It's been awhile since I made it, but I think what I did was cut out a rectangle and used it to trace.

Yes! What I did was trace the part on the felt and cut it out with about 1/5" of a seam allowance (cutting 1/5" outside the lines).
