Gero Gero!
Eruka's hat is tricky. I didn't like any of the hats I had seen photos of so I made my own. I think it turned out pretty well.

  • How to make an animal hat. Eruka Frog Hat - Step 1
    Step 1

First your going to want to cut your pattern. Measure your head to get a rough idea of what measurements you'll need.

Me head was 22 inches + 2 inches for seams / in half.

So when making the pattern it should roughly be 12 inches wide by 12 inches high. You'll want the hat about as high as it is wide.

Cut two on the fold of the batting and one in the stretch.

The outside stretch should be cut somewhat like the one on the left.

Long tail with a ball on the end. You may want your tail a little thicker then I made mine. It looks fine, but its a bugger to turn.

Sew your cones! All four of them. ^^; Well three and you mutated cone with the strange growth.

    Step 7

Time to make the brim pattern. The best way is to get a bowl roughly the size of the hat and trace around it, then go about the circle marking about 2 1/2 inches out from the circle.

Cut one in the batting and two in the stretch.

Then sew the brims to the cones.

Now to dye your stretch material yellow. (not required if you happen to find yellow cotton stretch. I couldn't find any less then $10 a yard.)

Now for the eyes. I made these a while ago. They were made with sculpty and round findings to be sewn on like a button.

These are them all sanded down and ready for some paint.

All painted and dried! I added the eyes with sharpie.

    Step 13

You'll want to lightly spray the batting part of the hat with adhesive and carefully slip the outside cover on and smooth out the face area.

Stitch on the eyes on loosely and secure further with hot glue.

The slip the lining into the inside of the hat, pin, and sew.

Paint on the face. I tried to hand stitch the nose, but really fabric paint or fabric markers would work better.

I used fabric markers to add some depth to the top brow.
