• 

  Step 1

  Start by measuring your sewing machine from the back to the front.

• 

  Step 2

  Cut out a piece of fabric large enough to cover your machine from front to back with an 1" excess on every side.

• 

  Step 3

  Fold the edges over by 1/2" and then fold over by another 1/2" and pin.

• 

  Step 4

  Now measure the sides of your sewing machine and cut two rectangles of fabric to the same width and height with an extra 1" excess on every side and place to the side.

• 

  Step 5

  I really wanted to add a pocket for my craft idea book on the front of my sewing machine, so I used my satchel for inspiration.

• 

  Step 6

  Cut out templates for the pocket. You need a rectangle as large as your book with an extra 1/2" around every side. A matching rectangle with rounded corners at the bottom and two little buckle shapes.

• 

  Step 7

  Pin your templates to your fabric.

• 

  Step 8

  Cut out two of the rectangles for the pouch, two of the rounded rectangles for the flap and four buckles.

• 

  Step 9

  Pin the buckles on top of each other, wrong sides facing out. Sew around the outside edges, leaving the top edge unstitched. Fold inside out and then sew up the top edge. Repeat for the other buckle.

  Step 10

  Measure around the sides and bottom of the pouch and cut a rectangle long enough to fit and as wide as your book plus your regular seam allowance.

  Step 11

  Place the two rounded for the flap on top of each other, wrong sides facing out, sew around the edge leaving a gap. Fold inside out and sew the open edge closed.

• 

  Step 12

  Sew the two rectangles for the pocket together around the outline, with the wrong sides of the fabric facing up but leave a small opening. Turn inside out and stitch closed the opening.

  Fold the long rectangle of fabric in half lengthways and then fold either side in half, so that the raw edges meet in the middle. Sew along the bottom edge and then fold in either edge at the sides and sew neatly.

  Step 13

  Using your book to get the size just right, pin the long strip along the sides and bottom of the rectangle and sew in place.

  Step 14

  Pin the buckles on to the bottom of the flap.

• 

  Step 15

  Sew the buckles in place.

• 

  Step 16

  Pin in place on the underside of the flap.

• 

  Step 17

  Work out where you want your pocket positioned on the front of your sewing machine cover.

• 

  Step 18

  Sew the flap in place.

• 

  Step 19

  Place the pouch underneath and pin in place.

• 

  Step 20

  Sew the pouch around the edges.

• 

  Step 21

  Test out your new pouch with your idea book.

• 

  Step 22

  I like to keep my sewing patterns in A4 envelopes and I wanted to add a pouch for the pattern I was working on at the back of my cover. Cut a rectangle of fabric to the same width as your cover but a little shorter and pin over all of the edges. Sew along the top edge.

  Step 23

  Pin the pocket to the bottom of your cover and sew in place.

• 

  Step 24

  Position your cover back over your sewing machine and work out the width of your side panels, marking them with a pin.

• 

  Step 25

  Lay one side of your sewing machine cover down and place all the tools you'd like to keep in place, cutting lengths of fabric for each pocket.

• 

  Step 26

  Starting with the back pocket, fold over the edge by 1/2", then by another 1/2" and sew. Pin at the sides.

• 

  Step 27

  Continue adding all the pockets and then fold under the bottom edges and pin along the bottom.

• 

  Step 28

  Check that everything fits nicely and then place your sewing supplies to the side.

• 

  Step 29

  Now starting with the shallowest bottom pocket, fold under either edge, pin in place.

• 

  Step 30

  Sew along the bottom and any vertical pockets you want to add.

• 

  Step 31

  Continue working your way up the pockets, fold under either side to match the backing piece and pin in place.

• 

  Step 32

  Once you've pinned up all the pocket, sew along either edge, removing the pins as you go.

• 

  Step 33

  Pin the finished side panel in place on the side of the cover, along the lines you previous sewed on the outside edge sof the outer cover, so that they create a little flap which hides the pocket underneath.

• 

  Step 34

  Sew along the sides.

• 

  Step 35

  Neaten up the top edge, pin and sew shut.

• 

  Step 36

  Remove your finished cover from your machine, pop up the sewing machine's handle and place your cover back on.

• 

  Step 37

  Cut a slit at the top of your cover, where the handle touches and then neatly pin under the edges, creating a hole big enough for the handle to slip through.

• 

  Step 38

  Sew around the edges of the hole.

• 

  Step 39

  Finally, cut a couple of foam ears to embellish the top of your cover. It's best to use white foam but I only had green. Place the foam ears on top of your fabric and cut four fabric ears with a little seam allowance around the edges.

• 

  Step 40

  With two ears on top of each other, wrong sides facing out and the foam in the middle for a template, s around the top top edges.

• 

  Step 41

  Fold the ear inside out and place over the foam.

• 

  Step 42

  Stitch an inner ear along the top edge of the ear, through the foam.

• 

  Step 43

  Fold under the bottom edge of the ear, pin in place and cut off any excess foam. Repeat to make the other ear.

• 

  Step 44

  Hand stitch the two ears at either side of your cover, bending them a little to give them a 3D shape.

• 

  Step 45

  Finally, sew two velcro dots under the flaps of your front pocket and then sew two cute buttons to the front.

• 

  Step 46

  Pop your idea book in it's pouch, any patterns you're working on in the back pocket. Pop your tools in their pockets and you're all ready to sew at a moment's notice!
