  Step 1

  Draw four straight lines coming from a vanishing point towards the bottom left of the page. About half way up the page and between the two outer lines, draw the torso of your mecha character: a rough square shape with rounded corners, with two lines below, as shown...

  Step 2

  For the head, add a pentagon shape with curved points towards the top right of the main body shape. Draw in tubular legs below...

  Step 3

  Add some back boosters and fins, and rims on the bottom of the legs, all following the perspective lines...
  the two fins should not be quite level, as the body is twisted at a slight angle

  Step 4

  Draw some large, gripping hands that fill the top part of the page, and some stabilising fins coming from the back. Draw in some robotic facial features...

  Step 5

  Draw speed lines coming down out of the leg boosters and making a sharp turn across the bottom right of the page...

  Step 6

  Draw a diagonal line to show where the wall meets the ground, then a hole in the wall around the speed lines...

  and add a

  Step 7

  The mecha character is rescuing a girl from captivity – draw a wireframe for the top and bottom of her body, which is held in the figure’s left hand...

  Step 8

  Flesh out the girl with long, straggly hair, a jacket, leggings and ankle boots. Give her an excited facial expression and outstretched fingers..

• Step 9

  Add lots of rubble and broken rock bursting from the hole – the more the better!

  Step 10

  Ink the whole drawing with black except the girl’s hair, which should be outlined in red. Use a thick line on the mecha character and a fine line on the rubble and speed lines...

  Step 11

  Start colouring the wall with a warm beige, and build up several layers of colour. Fill in the hole with black and grey...

• 

  Step 12

  Colour your mecha figure with bold primary colours and give it a dark grey face...

• 

  Step 13

  Colour the girl’s jacket and boots brown and her leggings grey. Colour in her hair bright pink and add flesh tone to her face and hands...

  Leave an area white as a highlight

• 

  Step 14

  Build up depth by adding darker tones and shading. Adding more than one layer of the same colour builds a rich warmth...

• 

  Step 15

  Finish by applying even more layers of colour and use white paint to pick out speed lines. Add speed lines on top of the figure with coloured pencils...
