About
How to make a little baby cardigan
I wanted to make something really simple and fast. I’m guessing the size but it looks like a 0-3 months, apologies if I’m way out!
I made this in just over an hour! Great if you need a quick last minute gift. It hasn’t been test knit, except by myself, so please let me know if you find anything wrong.
I’m going to try and make it bigger, add longer sleeves etc and will add those details as and when I do
A big thank you to Linnah for noticing an error in stitch counts, I’ve now corrected this :)

Step 1
5.5mm needles (I used circulars but straights will work too, you knit back and forth and not in the round)
4 stitch markers
Approximately 100yards of yarn (this is very approximate as the gift didn't list the yardage. I'm guessing the amount from the magazines suggestion of alternative yarn that could be used for the project it was intended for)
Needle to weave ends, stitch on button and to embroider flowers, if you choose to add them
One button
Scraps of green yarn for stems and any colour preferred for flowers if you are adding them -
Step 2
Abbreviations used
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
P - purl
K - knit
Sts - stitches
YO - yarn over the needle
K2tog - knit 2 stitches together
KFB - knit into the front and back of the next stitch (increases one stitch)
PM - place marker
SM - slip marker
Mkr - marker
S1 - slip one stitch without knitting
CO - cast on (I use long tail cast on but you can use whichever you prefer)
Rep - repeat the instructions in the brackets -
Step 3
The cardigan is knit in one piece with no seaming
CO 45 sts
1 & 2. K1, P1 rib across all sts
3. (K1, P1) rep to last 3 sts, yo, K2tog, K1
4. (WS) S1, K2, P6, PM, P7, PM, P13, PM, P7, PM, P6, K3
5. (RS) S1, K2, (K to 2 sts before mkr, KFB, K1, SM, K1, KFB ) rep three times, K to end
6. S1, K2, P to last 3 sts, K3
7 - 27. Rep rows 5 & 6. You should then have the following number of stitches between the mkrs. 21/31/37/31/21
(Thank you to Linnah on Ravelry for noticing my numbers were wrong)
28. S1, K2, P to mkr and then cast off sts until you reach the next mkr (27 sts), this will form the sleeve. P to the next mkr and then rep for the next sleeve. P to last 3 sts, K3
29. S1, K to end of row. (77 sts)
30. S1, K2, P to last 3 sts, K3
31 - 38. Rep rows 29 & 30
39. S1, (K1, P1) rep to end f row
40. S1, (P1, K1) rep to end f row
41. S1, (K1, P1) rep to end f row
Cast off all sts purl wise
Weave in ends and add button.
I then embroidered stems along each front at different heights and small flowers on each stem. You could use small buttons for flowers if you wanted, or add anything else or nothing at all!
