Aaaaaangry Biiiiiiiirds!
Apologies for the dark photos - focusing was dodgy.

This is a present I made for my 2nd anniversary with my boyfriend. We had some epic Angry Birds competitions when we caught trains (before I bought my car!) and this was a cute little memento for him to hang on his keys and make him think of me.

You need a keyring, some elastic or other string for attaching, and some modeling clay (fimo etc - I just used W H Smith's own brand version). I didn't think about doing a How To as I was making, so appreciate my doodles!

  • How to sculpt a clay character charm. Angry Birds Keyring - Step 1
    Step 1

We will start with the bird. I made the Red Bird, but you could do your favourite, or even all of them (it'd be a heavy key ring though!)

Take a fair sized lump of clay (Mine was marked in chunks of maybe 1cm x 2cm so I used two) and roll it into a rough ball shape (or triangle if you wanna do the yellow bird).

I used white clay and painted it, but you could use coloured clay if you prefer.

    Step 2

Pinch the top up into a quiff shape (as pictured). It should be flattened (use a picture for inspiration).

Poke a hole in the pinched up bit. I used a pen, but it's probably better to use actual moulding tools if you have them!

Now take another bit of clay, and shape it into a cone, smaller than your bird body. It's gonna be the beak.

Attach the beak and shape to your satisfaction.

    Step 6

Do similar to make your pig - roll a chunk into a slightly squashed ball this time. Pinch up two bits for ears and poke a hole in one. Then instead of a beak, make a cylinder for a piggy nose and pop it in place.

    Step 7

Bake or air dry your clay (whatever it says on the packet) and then on to the fun part - painting them up!

I used poster paint then gave them a layer of PVA glue to varnish. If I'd had it I would've used proper varnish so I suggest buying some! It'll stop the paint from chipping off.

    Step 8

String them up and attach to the keyring.

I tied one on either end of a bit of elastic and then looped them onto the ring. If I did this make again, I'd actually get chain and bake it into the clay.

Voila! I made a card tag as it was a present, but you can just stick them on your keys and be the envy of your mobile game playing friends :)

I can't wait to see them Taylor Rea! Happy Hand made is always better. I'm considering hand making most of my presents this year.

Just from the mister having his clacking together for a bit, I will say definitely invest in some proper varnish 'cos PVA glue doesn't protect it well enough.

I am definitely going to do this! My boyfriend and I have already made plans to make them together for my family for Christmas. I live across the country from them, so I am excited to make them hand-made gifts (Those are so much better, don't ya think?) and we are going to do the King Pig for my dad, the big fat red bird for my mom, and the blue and the yellow birds for my two sisters. Thank you SO much for the idea! I'll be sure to get pictures of my version!
