Super bulky yarns?
Hey all.
Recently I started to loom knit because I couldn't find any warm winter hats made from cotton. I'm allergic to wool, acrylic, and polyester, which unfortunately are the top three fibers in all of the really pretty bulky yarns.
The only cotton yarn I have been able to find is pretty thin.
I've tried searching for really super bulky cotton yarns but I haven't been able to find any.
Do any of you knitters/crocheters know where I could maybe find some? I want some nice thick yarns so I can make really warm hats (it's the third day of cold weather here and already it's below zero F).
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Have you tried t-shirt yarn?
You can buy it or make it yourself, plenty of tutorials out there.
I haven't tried it, but I might if I can't find anything else. I was hoping to find something made from cotton that looks as pretty as a lot of the acrylic yarns do... something with pizzazz or sparkle.
Have you tried WEBS (yarn.com)? I've heard plenty about them on Ravelry but not tried them personally. A quick search for cotton turned up plenty of options. If the yarn isn't as thick as you'd like you can try doubling it up (one end from the centre and one from the outside if you only have one ball)
Also have you tried/considered alpaca yarn? Alpaca tends to be low allergenic and many people who are allergic to wool can wear alpaca (and it's very warm!)
I'll look into alpaca wool! And I will check out WEBS.
I've been doubling my cotton yarns from the start, I might have to triple them because doubling them is still too thin for my liking.
If you want to treble your yarn look into navajo/navaho knitting. It's a way of trebling your yarn without splitting the ball (again not tried it but it's out there!)
I love knitting with alpaca. It is super soft and pretty bulky
Wow Monika, I don't like the searches I did for Chunky and bulky cotton yarn. IDK if you will find a bulk that you like…. although I hadn't checked with "Cookies N Cream" brand specifically to see if they offer a bulk….. I shall now!
http://www.redherringknits.com/blog/111212/ this site is discussing "hypoallergenic" yarn; which has no certification just a general "less likely not to cause allergies" They mention bamboo yarn; which is a type of rayon. Nothing looks a bulky as the "rug" yarn that is not what you need.
I had a friend allergic to metal, she couldn't even wear belts, this is so sucky for you! I hope I could help, and that it won't be too costly for you.
That article wad really helpful, thanks! I am going to look into alpaca wool yarn to see what I can find.
I know Cookies n Cream makes very thin yarns as well as more average thicknesses but I have never seen a chunky yarn made by them.
My fiance wants me to knit him a headband to put under his bike helmet... luckily he can wear wool without issue... I'll just have to wear gloves while I make it. Lol
I'm currently using Bernat Handicrafter Chunky (a bulky cotton yarn) to make a basket, but I don't know how good it would be for a hat because it's pretty stiff. Maybe it softens up after being washed?
I've seen it too very tempted, but I think I'd have to shop online.
