i stopped sewing clothing many years ago as patterns did not fit my body. i have no experience in altering patterns but would love to take a stab at trying clothing again. any ideas or help from you who have had the same experience?

i personally take pattern making classes and that has solved a lot problems since i make everything according to my own measurements and it is really helpful, this blog has some nice patterns:http://wkdesigner.wordpress.com/
and here is some info about pattern alteration:http://sewingtutorials.blogspot.gr/2008/05/pattern-alterations.html http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_c/c-228.html and http://fcs.tamu.edu/clothing/pattern-alteration.php

There are online pattern generators that could help. Always take accurate measurements and you can develop your own patterns from there.

I'm not sure if it's McCalls or Simplicity that offers a line of patterns with fitting instructions included. The patterns have cup specific bust adjustments. I learned to sew a very long time ago and remember that the pattern companies used to have a fitting pattern available. You would cut the pattern to your measurements on gingham fabric and adjust this muslin to fit you. You would then use this pattern to help you alter all other patterns to fit you. I think they still sell these fitting patterns; I remember they were on the last page of the catalog. Threads magazine online has really good tips section.
