I'm a freelance illustrator and cartoonist based in San Francisco. I work at an awesome comic book store in the city and love to enthuse about plot lines, inking and character design all day. At home, I love to binge watch Frasier while drawing sassy pin-ups and drinking endless Matcha lattes. I'm inspired by vintage tattoo flash, 90s TV shows and my fellow bus-riders (who do the strangest things). On my days off I try and explore the city's many parks and find the best brunch spots.
Have you always been creative and artistic?
Yes, most of my mother's side of the family were/are artists so I pretty much grew up with a crayons in one hand and a stack of Archie Comics, Tintin and MAD magazines in the other. My grandfather was a cartoonist, watercolorist and avid historian, and from a very young age he drilled into me invaluable lessons like the right way to clean a brush or how to get someone's expression just right.
How would you describe the style of your work?
Cl-ass-ic -- I like to think of myself as traditionally trained but with a flare for the sassy.
What’s in your pencil case and what’s your favorite tool?
5 different kinds/colors of japanese brush pen, a few mechanical pencils (all running out of lead), a bone-folder which I "liberated" from my college book making classroom, a binder clip, a midnight blue metallic Gelly Roll pen and some old paychecks (which should probably be filed away somewhere more secure). My fave is most certainly ALL of my brush pens.
Who is your favorite superhero?
THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL or Hellboy (but I'm not too sure if he counts...)
If you could have one super power what would it be?
Oooh I always think about this and can never really decide between invisibility, the ability to talk to animals or the ability to shrink (and un-shrink) whatever I want without any ramifications...
Where do you look for inspiration?
A crowded bus is one of the best places from inspiration. If I'm home and need inspiration, I end up scrolling through Tumblr or pulling out all the graphic novels I have on my shelf and leafing through them all until I've found the right one for the moment.
Who are your favorite artists or comic book authors?
I love Charles Dana Gibson, Herge, Mike Mignola, Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples (of Saga), Jack Kirby, Darwin Cooke, Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, Adrian Tomine, Paul Pope, the Moon and Ba brothers, Goran Parlov just to name a few!
