When did you first start getting crafty and creative with fashion?
I was a tomboy growing up, but I always loved making crafts and working with my hands. I had been making jewelry, knitting and crocheting since the 3rd grade, and then I was introduced to sewing in the 7th grade. After that I began sewing almost every day. In the 8th grade, sewing had become such a part of my life that I knew it was what I wanted to do for as long as I could, which turned me onto the field that I’m pursuing now – fashion design.
Who are your favorite fashionistas and designers?
To name a few, I love Orla Kiely, Zandra Rhodes, Eddie Borgo, Sam Walls Beasley, Luisa Beccaria, Charles James, Alice Temperley, Mary Katranzou, Ann Demeulemeester, and I’ll stop it there because this could go on for a while.
What are your ultimate style tips?
Try pairing items in your closet that you've never tried on together before! Whenever I get really board with my style, I combine layers that's I’ve never tried in the past. I usually find a new outfit combination that I love!
If you could borrow one thing from a celebrities wardrobe, what & who would you choose?
I would go after a coat from Jessica Chastain's closet! I think her style is so timeless and a well-tailored coat makes even simple jeans and a t-shirt look put together.
Which fashion blogs do you love to read?
I love the Rookie Mag, Shae Acopian Detar’s blog, WishWishWish, and I just found this blog the other week and have been obsessed with her style: http://butaneanvil.blogspot.com/
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
I draw as much as possible! I just finished my first year at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. For their curriculum all of the freshmen have to go through a year of what they call “foundation studies.” Basically, for the first year we're required to be trained in the classical fine arts: drawing, color theory, 3d design, etc...
So this past year I've been constantly drawing and keeping sketchbook journals. I found that I really love the process of looking and trying to capture what I see through drawing. So now I’m in the habit of drawing things that I see throughout my day. I also write a lot, which is something that I’d like to share more of in the future.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
If you're a crafter, designer, or creative thinker, I highly recommend keeping a sketching, collage, or writing journal to document your thought process! It’s a good habit to keep and also it's a lot of fun!
