Description

This is an endlessly useful and and easily adapted pattern! Zipped bags of all sizes are quickly made and perfect for pens, cosmetics, knitting supplies, and books.

Instructions

  1. Small 107140 2f2015 01 30 130008 p130%2bstep%2b1

    Dye the silk.

  2. Once the silk has dried, gently press (make sure the iron is at the correct setting for your fabric) and cut the fabric to 12 x 17 in. (30 x 42.5cm). This will give you a bag measuring 10 x 8 in. (25 x 20 cm).

  3. Small 107140 2f2015 01 30 125952 p130%2bstep%2b3

Open the zipper and pin one side of the zipper to one of the short ends of the fabric, right sides together, with the underside of the zipper facing upward. Using the zipper foot on your sewing machine, stitch in place. Repeat to attach the other side of the zipper to the other short edge. You should now have a “tube” of fabric, joined together by the zipper. Change to a flat seam foot and zigzag stitch these two edges to prevent fraying.

  4. Small 107140 2f2015 01 30 125943 p130%2bstep%2b4

With the bag still inside out, position the fabric so that the zipper is approximately 1¼ in. (4 cm) down from the top and pin along the sides. Machine stitch down both sides, taking a ½-in. (1-cm) seam allowance, and then zigzag stitch the raw edges.

  5. Small 107140 2f2015 01 30 125937 p131%2bstep%2b5

Turn the bag right side out through the opened zipper. Make a zipper pull: take a strip of fabric and fold both raw edges in toward the center. Fold in half lengthways to conceal the raw edges and topstitch to secure. Knot through the zipper head as shown.
