This project is easy, but a little time consuming and extremely cute! I love how it turned out. If you're looking for a great way to decorate for the Lunar New Year this is it.
This project is easy, but a little time consuming and extremely cute! I love how it turned out. If you're looking for a great way to decorate for the Lunar New Year this is it.
The ingredients. You’re going to want a lot of fluted coffee filters and a lot of hot glue for this project so if you think you've already got enough on hand buy more anyways just in case.
Prepare both your lantern and your workstation. You’re going to want everything to be within an arms reach because you’re dealing with heat and a multitude of variables.
Glue the filters to the paper lantern in the pattern that you find the most appealing. I actually changed this up a few times while I was making the lantern, just to see what I liked most. Play around with this and figure out how you want it to look. There’s really no “right” way to do this. This part could easily take you upwards of 3 hours depending on how big your lantern is. Once you”re done with this part, you’re basically done with the lantern.
I didn’t have enough filters to go all the way around, but I didn’t really want to go out and get more of something I don’t really use to finish it, so I figured it was fine. It’s going to be the bottom anyway.
Find a template for the face and ears that you like. I did a lot of searching online for this and I recommend actually making them from scratch using black and brown paper. That would be a lot easier than searching online to find features that you like. Sadly, I didn’t have the time to do that, or else I would have.
Glue the face to the lantern. You can add legs/hooves and maybe a ‘Happy 2015′ sign if you want.
Then you’re done! You’ve got a super cute paper lantern to celebrate the Lunar New Year with.
