I saw one of these for sale on the internet, it was cut out of wood, and was a bit ugly. So I figured I could make my own from a cardboard box :) I turned out pretty well for just making it up as I went!

Description

I saw one of these for sale on the internet, it was cut out of wood, and was a bit ugly. So I figured I could make my own from a cardboard box :) I turned out pretty well for just making it up as I went!

Instructions

  1. Small img 2250

Find a box that is long enough to fit a skein of yard in it, and is a bit deep also. So tape up the flaps that close the top of the box with masking tape.

  2. Small img 2251

Mark a line down from the top to the crease of the box, about 1-1.5 inches from each side on the front of the box. The cut down the lines until you reach the crease, then fold the flap down toward the inside of the box.

  3. Small img 2252

Tape up all the sides and the edges where you just cut, make sure to tape down the flap you pushed inside the box also.

  4. Small img 2254

On the short sides find the very middle of the side, then draw a straight line up to the top of the box. From there measure toward the BACK of the box 1 inch. Then dram a line from 1 inch back down at an angle to the middle of the side, cut out a sliver there. (of course you can just look at the picture and estimate on yours if you want.)

  5. Small img 2253

Here is a close up of mine, don't forget that it needs to be angled toward the BACK of the box, otherwise when you pull on your yarn when it's on the skewer, it will pull towards you and fall out.

Now you can paint your box whatever color you like! I did mine grey, and it took a few coats of paint, letting it dry in between. Then use your glue stick and scrapbook paper to decorate the box all over. To make it extra polished use decorative tape to cover all the rough edges of the cardboard.

Another view of my decorated box.

Now you need a skewer (wooden dowel or chopstick) and a bead with a hole large enough to fit on the stick. Sand down your stick if it is really rough, and paint it a cool color. Then use the hot glue to stick on the bead.

Thread your yarn on to the stick and then drop it into the slots cut in the sides, and get busy crafting!
