Description

Wood is one of my favorite unusual surfaces to work with, although it is pretty tricky and you will need lots of patience at first!

Instructions

  1. First, you can just get these little wood shapes at Michael's or pretty much any craft store. You can also get different shapes if you so choose, as long as they're big enough to fit all your names. I decided I wanted to darken them a bit, so I applied a dark walnut stain I had in the garage--I think it makes the white pop nicely! One thing I must emphasize is the ink, this is one of the few calligraphy inks I've found that works correctly on wood (without bleeding, etc.). You can find it at Paper and Ink Arts!

  2. Here's a video of how it goes--you will need to have a pretty solid calligraphy technique to tackle this. I decided to include the mess up at the end of this video to emphasize the fact that when working with actual nibs on wood, instead of paint brushes or pens, the nib is very likely to catch on the wood. Because of this, be sure to have plenty of extra wood pieces! Just work slowly, and be patient when you mess up.

  3. And that's it!
