Find yourself a shamefully cute chest from your childhood.
Go down to your local boxed home supply store and purchase yourself some wood grain contact paper.
Cut a large enough piece to cover a side of the chest and over the metal. Press down hard, I also used a putty spreader to get bubbles and creases out. Then you take a box cutter and cut in between the metal and the surface you want covered. Pull the cut pieces off. Make sure the grain of the wood is going in the same direction...if you're anal like me.
Make your way around all the sides and top. A couple things I found useful was if I cut wrong, I could cut a small piece of contact paper following the grain and place it next to the metal, and for the most part you couldn't tell that I made a mistake. Also it was easier to put the contact paper on top of the old paper covering. When I had tried to take the paper off, which was chip wood pressed together,i wasn't able to stick the contact paper that well. You probably could use mod podge if the contact paper isn't sticking.
and here is your fancy wood grained chest, if you're lucky like me it will match your fancy fake wood grain floor!
