Steps (6 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Transfer the enlarged templates on page 64 onto card or craft paper and cut out. For the mittens, fold the blue sparkle denim or pink wool fabric in half, with right sides together. Draw around the enlarged template with chalk, pin to hold and cut out. Machine stitch around the mitten, stitching 1cm (3/8in) away from the raw edge and leaving the straight edge open to allow stuffing and turning through. Clip and trim the excess seam allowance and turn through. Stuff with toy stuffing. To close, turn 1cm (3/8in) inwards along the opening. Make sure you insert one end of the knitted braid before closing by machine. Repeat for both mittens.

  2. 2

For the bobble hat, fold the beige jersey in half with, right sides together. Draw around the enlarged template from page 64 and pin to hold. Cut out and attach some fancy bias along the straight edges. Pin the pieces, right sides together, and machine stitch round the work, leaving the straight edge open. Trim the excess seam allowance and turn through. Stuff the hat with toy stuffing and slip stitch the opening closed. Sew a pompom to the top to finish.

  3. 3

For the scarf, trim the long edges of the thick checked wool with some fancy bias binding and press flat.

  4. 4

To make the fringed edges simply thread a needle with cotton yarn and sew through 1cm (3/8in) from the edge looping the yarn over your finger as you go. Once you have reached the end, lay the loops flat and cut to the desired length, cutting straight across. Add a decorative stitch above the fringe line.

  5. 5

For the pompoms, make as many as you like from white wool. Leave a decent amount of loose wool to attach them to the bunting.

  6. 6

Lastly, machine sew two lengths of bias binding together as close to the edges as possible. Press flat. Place all the elements in position and slip stitch. Suspend the hats with grey embroidery thread and simply tie the mittens in place.
