First off this is my first tutorial so I'm sorry if it is wordy. This is a pretty complicated cake and wanted to make sure I covered everything. Feel free to ask anything and I'll try to answer it. I did this cake for my boyfriends 30th b-day. So I wrapped a box and added a note on the gift tag. I put "The cake may be a lie, but you know the companion cube will always be there for you. Well.....until you burn it" I baked the cakes on Thursday, decorate on Friday, and we ate it on Sunday. It was delicious! So if you need to plan ahead since it takes a long time you'll be safe with doing it three days in advanced.

These are all the items I used. -Three boxes of white cake mix -Fresh sliced strawberries -Strawberry Gel (found by the fresh strawberries) -Five pound box of fondant (I used just about all of it. I picked it up at Jo-ann Fabrics. It cost about $20, but I used a 50% off coupon that they have in the Sunday ads) -Butter Cream frosting -Cake Leveler or long sharp knife -Red and Black icing dyes (get a pair of gloves) -9x9 pan -Search google images for Weighted Companion Cube pattern. Look for the black and white flat picture. It typically comes up on the first page.
Use the cake level or long sharp knife on the top. You want to make it as flat as possible. Put a layer of strawberry gel and a layer of sliced strawberries between each layer. **The cakes took about 40 min to bake so I made them the night before I decorated the cake. I intended to use the cake leveler to remove the center hump that forms while baking. I forgot =( So my cakes weren't flat which caused a slight problem later.
After putting the layers together frost the cake in butter cream frost. You want to make it as smooth as possible because I did buy a box but it wasn't enough so I made my own. 2 1/2 tbsp of soft butter 1 1/2 cups Confectioners sugar 1 1/2 tbsp cream or milk 3/4 tbs vanilla
Use one entire sleeve that comes in the 5 pound box. Put in a couple drops of the black dye at a time. Mix it thoroughly. Make sure to wear gloves or you will stain your hands. **This took me about 20 min to mix it smoothly.
Make sure you have a smooth clean surface to work on. Cover your area and rolling pin with a thin layer of confectioners sugar before rolling out the sugar. **My dining room table has a plastic cover which made working with the fondant super easy. I didn't have much of a problem with it sticking.
Using the rolling pin to help move the rolled out fondant to the cake. Smooth out the top then the sides. There will be a lot of extra fondant you'll need to cut off with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. **This step is pretty difficult to explain. I went to youtube and searched "how to work with fondant". I strongly suggest this if you haven't worked with fondant before.
Take all the extra fondant and mix in fresh fondant. Do not add anymore dye since this should be a lighter color. Cut the pieces out of the pattern you printed. Lay them flat and cut them out with a sharp utensil. You'll cut twenty of the corner and side pieces, and five circles. To attach them just use a paint brush and some water. Brush it on the back of the piece and place it firmly on the cake. Hold for a few seconds.
For the pink just get fresh fondant and mix in a couple drops of red at a time. Cutting and attaching is identical to the other pieces. Then You're done =)
