Description

In this project we will combine working with delicate and bright watercolours and adding modeling paste to our painting.

Instructions

  1. Small 2018 01 10 111358 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h07m48s034

Select your favourite stencil and apply modeling paste through it in the middle of the page all the way to the bottom, leave some space at the top of your page for the face. The modeling paste should be applied at about 2mm thickness. Too thin and you won't get a nice texture, too thick and it will take ages to dry.

  2. Small 2018 01 10 111611 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h08m01s832

Carefully peel the stencil off. At this point you can continue with the rest of the project, but it will take a few hours for the modeling paste to dry, so be careful not to smudge it. If you prefer you can put the piece aside for a couple of hours to dry.

  3. Small 2018 01 10 111742 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h08m16s577

Sketch a simple face at the top of the page, make it so the neck is attached to the modeling paste (so the patterned modeling paste is the 'body')

  4. Small 2018 01 10 111820 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h08m38s146

Use your watercolours to add simple shading and details to the face.

  5. Small 2018 01 10 111837 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h08m50s286

Wet the top part of the paper and drop different watercolours on it. They will fan out and merge into each other for a very dreamy effect.

  6. Small 2018 01 10 111917 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h09m21s172

Load your brush with water and press to the paper, tilt the paper up to make drips. Make sure the drips don't go over the face.

  7. Small 2018 01 10 112012 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h11m28s367

Keep adding more colours to the 'hair' until you are satisfied.

  8. Small 2018 01 10 112028 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h11m40s240

Use a brayer and metallic paint on top of the modeling paste (the modeling paste needs to be dry for this step)

  9. Small 2018 01 10 112057 vlcsnap 2018 01 10 11h11m54s714

Tap your brush to create splatters. Use some scrap paper to cover the parts of the painting that you want to protect.
