Draw a tree on the canvas with your pencil.
Pick a bright color and paint the background with acrylic paint. Let some of the paint drip down one side of the canvas.
Next paint the tree, using a small paintbrush to stay inside the lines.
Draw about 26 butterflies on rough watercolor paper, using a fine-point permanent black marker. Make them all different sizes, shapes, and patterns!
Add color to the butterflies with watercolor paint or thinned acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely.
Cut out the butterflies. They don’t need to perfect; it’s just fine to leave some of the white watercolor paper showing, especially around the antennae! Punch four holes in a zigzag pattern in the center of each butterfly.
Use heavy-duty thread to stitch the butterflies onto the canvas in a random pattern.
If you’d like, use a watercolor pencil or crayon to add a short message or phrase to complete your artwork!
