You Will Need (10 things)
- 14 x X 14 Canvas
- Pencil and Eraser
- Paintbrushes
- Acrylic Paint
- Rough Watercolor Paper
- Black fine-point Permanent Marker
- Watercolor Paint
- Scissors
- Small Hole Punch
- Large heavy-duty needle* and heavy-duty Thread *Adult supervision required
Steps (8 steps, 60 minutes)
-
1
Draw a tree on the canvas with your pencil.
-
2
Pick a bright color and paint the background with acrylic paint.
Let some of the paint drip down one side of the canvas. -
3
Next paint the tree, using a small paintbrush to stay inside the lines.
-
4
Draw about 26 butterflies on rough watercolor paper, using a fine-point permanent black marker. Make them all different sizes, shapes, and patterns!
-
5
Add color to the butterflies with watercolor paint or thinned acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely.
-
6
Cut out the butterflies. They don’t need to perfect; it’s just fine to leave some of the white watercolor paper showing, especially around the antennae! Punch four holes in a zigzag pattern in the center of each butterfly.
-
7
Use heavy-duty thread to stitch the butterflies onto the canvas in a random pattern.
