Sorry for lack of pictures, but I made this a while ago and didnt take pix of the work in progress... Hope my instructions are clear enough for you to understand without the pix.... :) If you're finding it hard to cut a perfect stencil, make sure you have a sharp blade in your craft knife and use a glass cutting board rather than a wooden one, it gives it a cleaner cut :)

Fold your calico in half and draw a gingerbread man shape on it, try and keep the arms and legs quite fat or you'll end up with little sticks that wont fit any pins in lol...
Cut the shape out, you should be left with two calico men. Pin together along the edges and start sewing about a 6mm seam along edges, leave a 3cm opening on the inner leg (you'll need this to stuff him/her). Trim little slits along any curves and slice off some of the extra fabric so when you turn it inside out it'll sit nicely.
Ok, turn it inside out and stuff with hobby fill or whatever you want to.... lol... hair, nails... haha... no lets just stick to the hobby fill ;) Once its nice n fat, get a needle n thread and hand sew it shut along the inner leg.
So now you should have a plain looking dolly... Now for the fun part, the painting. First you need to make a basic skeleton stencil using a craft knife and contact paper/duraseal as we call it in NZ... Cut the bone shapes out and keep the stencil. On a small piece of contact paper cut out a small heart stencil.
First you'll start off by sponge painting the whole doll black, do one side at a time and use the hairdryer to speed up drying time (and to heatset also). I'd recommend doing two coats.
Once thats all dry, peel the backing off the duraseal and place on your doll, dont worry that it hangs all over the edges, it'll protect the black. Now using a clean sponge brush, use the white fabric paint to dab in all the gaps for the bones. Dry with the hairdryer and do another coat. When you're happy with the thickness, peel off the contact paper and throw away.
Give it one last blast with the hair dryer then place your heart stencil on the doll wherever you desire. Using a clean sponge brush, dab red fabric paint to get the red heart. Hairdryer, another coat, hairdryer and you're done.
