After receiving The Glitterati, a new subscription box from Crown & Glory, I couldn't bare to put the gorgeous headbands out of site in a drawer so I was inspired to make a vintage light up frame to keep them on display.

Description

After receiving The Glitterati, a new subscription box from Crown & Glory, I couldn't bare to put the gorgeous headbands out of site in a drawer so I was inspired to make a vintage light up frame to keep them on display.

Instructions

  1. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 162256 img 4633

Start with a vintage style frame. I got this UNG DRILL frame at Ikea ages ago.

  2. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 162943 img 4636

Trace around your favourite headband on a piece of paper to make a template.

  3. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 163110 img 4639

Mark the positions for each of the 24 fairy lights on your template with circles.

  4. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 163130 img 4640

Stick the template in the middle of the frame.

  5. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 163654 img 4642

Use an awl to pierce a hole through each of the circles for the lights.

  6. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 163931 img 4643

Press the fairy lights through the frame from behind.

  7. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 164735 img 4645

Keep going until you've punched holes for all of the lights and then unthread them and place them to one side.

  8. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 085210 img 4652

Remove the backing from the frame and use it as a template to cut the shape from coloured card.

  9. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 165005 img 4655

Mark the positions of the lights with a circle and use a cutting knife to cut a cross in the middle of each circle.

  10. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 170043 img 4659

Glue the card onto the backing and rethread the lights.

  11. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 170053 img 4988

To give the frame a more vintage look I decided to paint mine with silver paint.

  12. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 170101 img 4989

I chose to give the frame one coat and paint it quite roughly because the parts of the black frame that remained unpainted gave it a nice tarnished look.

  13. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 170108 img 4990

    Leave to dry.

  14. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 170118 img 4991

Meanwhile, turn on the fairy lights and lay a sheet of mirror board over top so that the lights shine through.

  15. Small 108488 2f2015 04 13 170143 img 4993

Mark where each of the lights hit the mirror board with a pen.

  16. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 085304 img 4994

Cut a rough headband shape from the mirror board.

  17. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 085803 img 4995

Use a hole punch to punch holes through each of the marked points for the lights. The large punch on my Cropadile was the perfect size for the tips of the fairy lights.

  18. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 085910 img 4997

As you punch, check that the mirror board sits nicely on top of the lights.

  19. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 085931 img 5000

Use a cutting knife to cut a nice neat headband shape.

  20. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 090012 img 5219

Place the backing card in the dry frame and carefully stick the mirror board onto the fairy lights with a little glue.

  21. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 090045 img 5218

Cut some cork board to fit the back of the frame and glue in place.

  22. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 090115 img 5247

Mount on the wall and then press some hooks or hammer some nails into the cork board to hang your headbands.

  23. Small 108488 2f2015 04 14 090146 img 5241

Turn on, stand back and admire your handy work.
