After receiving The Glitterati, a new subscription box from Crown & Glory, I couldn't bare to put the gorgeous headbands out of site in a drawer so I was inspired to make a vintage light up frame to keep them on display.
After receiving The Glitterati, a new subscription box from Crown & Glory, I couldn't bare to put the gorgeous headbands out of site in a drawer so I was inspired to make a vintage light up frame to keep them on display.
Start with a vintage style frame. I got this UNG DRILL frame at Ikea ages ago.
Trace around your favourite headband on a piece of paper to make a template.
Mark the positions for each of the 24 fairy lights on your template with circles.
Stick the template in the middle of the frame.
Use an awl to pierce a hole through each of the circles for the lights.
Press the fairy lights through the frame from behind.
Keep going until you've punched holes for all of the lights and then unthread them and place them to one side.
Remove the backing from the frame and use it as a template to cut the shape from coloured card.
Mark the positions of the lights with a circle and use a cutting knife to cut a cross in the middle of each circle.
Glue the card onto the backing and rethread the lights.
To give the frame a more vintage look I decided to paint mine with silver paint.
I chose to give the frame one coat and paint it quite roughly because the parts of the black frame that remained unpainted gave it a nice tarnished look.
Leave to dry.
Meanwhile, turn on the fairy lights and lay a sheet of mirror board over top so that the lights shine through.
Mark where each of the lights hit the mirror board with a pen.
Cut a rough headband shape from the mirror board.
Use a hole punch to punch holes through each of the marked points for the lights. The large punch on my Cropadile was the perfect size for the tips of the fairy lights.
As you punch, check that the mirror board sits nicely on top of the lights.
Use a cutting knife to cut a nice neat headband shape.
Place the backing card in the dry frame and carefully stick the mirror board onto the fairy lights with a little glue.
Cut some cork board to fit the back of the frame and glue in place.
Mount on the wall and then press some hooks or hammer some nails into the cork board to hang your headbands.
Turn on, stand back and admire your handy work.
